Married N.J. governor resigns, admits to homosexual affair (http://www.cbc.ca/story/world/national/2004/08/12/NJgovernor_040812.html)
TRENTON, N.J. - New Jersey's governor, who is married with two children, announced his resignation, admitting that he had an extramarital affair with another man.
"My truth is that I am a gay American," Gov. James McGreevey, 47, said at a press conference on Thursday, his wife at his side.
"Shamefully, I engaged in adult consensual affairs with another man, which violates my bonds of matrimony. It was wrong, it was foolish, it was inexcusable."
The Democrat, who earlier had opposed same-sex marriages, said his resignation would become effective on Nov. 15, after the presidential election.
Senate President Richard Codey, a Democrat, will take over as acting governor until the four-year term ends in early 2006.
"It makes little difference that as governor I am gay," McGreevey said, but added that he had to leave because the secrets of his sexuality and the affair would have left the governor's office "vulnerable to rumors, false allegations and threats of disclosure."
The man involved in the affair is reportedly a former government employee who is threatening to file a sexual misconduct lawsuit against the governor.
McGreevey's administration has been hit by several fundraising scandals, including one that involved his first chief of staff and former counsel.
The governor, a Roman Catholic, graduated from Columbia University in 1978, earned a law degree from Georgetown University in 1981 and a master's degree in education from Harvard University in 1982.
He worked as a county prosecutor and lobbied for a pharmaceutical company before switching into municipal and state government.
"The governor, a Roman Catholic..."
I wonder how God feels about this?
