DJ arrested after on-air gag (http://cnews.canoe.ca/CNEWS/WeirdNews/2004/07/08/532506-ap.html)

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - A radio personality who wore a ski mask into a convenience store as part of an on-air prank has been charged with making a terrorist threat.

Dan Chappell, known to listeners of radio station KHFI as "Lunchbox," walked around the store narrating events on air using a phone before buying a pack of gum and leaving. He was arrested a short distance from the store, police said.

Chappell, 22, was charged with making a terrorist threat and faces up to a year in jail and up to a $4,000 fine. He did not immediately return a phone message Thursday.

Although no verbal threats were made, store clerk Atif Akhlaque said he thought he was going to be robbed and pressed the silent alarm.

It was the latest in a series of on-air gags by Chappell, who also has had a bikini wax, walked across hot coals and married a listener who was paid $100.

Terrorist threat?

edit: terrorist n. (often attrib.) person using esp. organized violence against a government etc. terrorism n. [French: related to *terror]

Oh yea. . .I see how the charge relates to the crime now. :?:

Actually (/me puts on her know it all hat), the word "terrorism" is quite a contentious one, legally. Like "insanity", for legal purposes the word takes on a whole new meaning. The UN hasn't even been able to reach agreement over what the term means, the closest they have come is that terrorism is an act that incites terror (duh!). So, I guess given the current situation walking around in a ski mask could well incite terror. Still, it'd be stretching the point of the law a bit far to prosecute this guy - they should just do him for some summary offence for having a bad sense of humor :)

I hope you're not surprised. It is the UN you're speaking of.

if they could charge ppl with having a bad sense of humor where would we all be?

I can assure you that I would be swinging from the gallows outside the comedy prison

I suppose I should retract my "gimp" remark....

Nah. I'll swing.

(addendum: At least we won't be swinging behind the preposition)

Given the above explication, especially that portion emphasized in yellow, Jesus Christ was a "terrorist", and for damned sure so is George W. Bush.

Absolutely! In fact, you hit on the heart of the matter Simon. I think the whole reason the UN can't agree on what terrorism is is because most definitions would make it so that if George Bush, or any other government, continues current practice, then they would be behaving contrary to the law.
