Man's Stomach Falls Out After Staples Removed
AFP

April 30, 2004 — George Sternats' first concern on returning home after having surgical staples removed from his abdomen following a stomach operation was to check on his backyard garden.

But instead of gathering some fresh vegetables, the 65-year-old found himself picking up his own stomach that had spilled out when his surgical wound reopened, his partner said on Friday.

"He was looking at how many tomatoes were on, and next minute I heard him scream 'Get the ambulance, my stomach fell out'," Cheryl Orme told reporters.

Sternats wrapped a towel around himself to hold his stomach in while Orme called an ambulance.

"They wanted to know if he had pains in his chest and I screamed at them 'His stomach fell out, he just got staples out from a cancer operation'," Orme recounted.

"What more can you say when your man's stomach's hanging out? Isn't that enough for them to come straight away?"

Sternats, from the northeastern city of Cairns, underwent surgery earlier this month to remove cancerous tumors from his abdomen and the surgical wound was closed with medical staples.

Doctors ordered the staples removed Wednesday morning and the couple returned home shortly after, Orme said.

Sternats was reported to be in stable condition but Orme said she planned to sue health authorities for negligence in removing the staples too soon.

"It's the most horrific thing I've ever seen, especially with someone you love," she said. "Every time I try to sleep I see George holding his stomach in his hands."

At first I was just going to post this a weird story. However, I read the last two paragraps and changed my reason.

Fuck this bitch and her sue happy attitude. The dude is fine. He's not dead. Money will not make the images go away.

Fuckers.

There's not a lot of things people ought to be suing for, but having your stomach fall out in the yard because a doctor didnt do right, thats one that is a deserving lawsuit in my book.

Maybe people are missing the point here.

The dude is fine.

What does suing accomplish? Please. . .tell me. Is she going to sue to have this NOT happen? What, get some time travel machine, and go back in the future to keep the staples in longer?

Bitches probably set this all up. Old fart shouldn't be materin' in his garden anyways. Should be sitting down watching golf. Old farts.

P-mahnn, if you want to be a champion for litigation reform, go for it, but there are hundreds of more worthy examples of frivilous lawsuits to support your arguements.

This old man is well within his rights to have his day in court.

*P-dude picks up phone to call the Dr.*

*Ring**Ring*

P-dude: ”Ahm, hello Doc, look ahm, I think you may have taken those staples out too early.”

Dr: “Are you having any kind of bleeding where the staples were?”

P-dude: “Well, I was but we’ve got it stopped now.”

Dr: “You may see that for a day or so, just remember what I told you about lifting things and rock climbing.”

P-dude: “Well sir, It wasn’t exactly just some minor bleeding, my stomach fell out onto the ground.”

Dr: “Pardon?”

P-dude: “The whole thing just kinda fell out. But we got it back in ok though and my wife did a banged up job with some duct tape so I’m ok.”

Dr: “P-dude, I’d like to see you in my office immediately.”

P-dude: “Nah, don’t worry about, I’m ok, these things happen I suppose. You guys just need to be more careful in the future though, ok?”

Dr: “You sure you’re ok?”

P-dude: “Yes sir, never better. I went and picked up some goo gone for when I take the tape off in a week or so.”

Dr: “Well if there’s anything else I can do for you, just let me know.”

P-dude: “Will do, thanks again sir, bye.”

*Click*

Dr: “That P-dude sure is a swell guy.”

wait, wait, wait!

I see what p-mahnn means here.
This is an instance where someone did a bad job and they need to make it right.
That should NOT mean that you automatically sue.....unfortunately in today's world where insurance companies own us all, that means you automatically sue...

but it doesn't have to and the fact that it does makes me ill.

hell, I guess dr's buy lotto tickets too.

No, sadly, you see what you want to see P-dude means here.

I was just goofin’ on him as usual but I understand some of his mentality on the subject. But, keep in mind there are several sides to this situation.

This is a sue happy world we live in no doubt. A lot of folks are just looking for their moment to capitalize on someone else’s stupidity, ignorance or error. Sticking to the subject matter of medical malpractice, there’s plenty of frivolous law suits that constantly jack up insurance costs. What isn’t frivolous is justifiable and with just cause just like the example above (some are border line yes). But here, we have total negligence and error from what is suppose to be a professional medical doctor. Had he (the Doc) left the staples in and instructed George not to do this and not to do that and he tore himself out doing what he wasn’t suppose to be doing, then we’re talking a different ballgame. But it’s obvious that the Doc took the staples out prematurely, and he, being the professional he is suppose to be, should’ve known better.

He fucked up, he should have to pay.

Now in our society today, we go for “payment” from what makes the world go ‘round…..MONEY. What should he except otherwise? A gift certificate to Bath and Body Works? Does that make it the way it should be? NO, I don’t think it does. If anything, the doctor should cover all hospital cost, prescription med cost etc and still have to go back and fix what he fucked up for free. To me, that would make it right. The Doc fucks up, he fixes me anywayz, and I’m still no more in debt before I had the operation. Yeah, that’s the ticket.

"Every time I try to sleep I see George holding his stomach in his hands."

That’s because he’s hungry. Feed the man.

I don't think he should be sued , but I do think that George should not be billed for the initial operation and the dr. should pay for George to get this mess fixed. I sure the hell wouldn't go to the same dr. though.
Regardless of what I think the relity is the dr. will get sued and most likely fired.

First off, when exactly was his surgery?
Second, when exactly was her released?
Third, what was he doing in the garden bending over potentially aggrevating the wound?
Lastly, How many times since he was released had he been doing things that wre potentially aggrevating the wound?

I've had my gut opened 3 times in one year.

My stomache did not fall out.

billy, I missed something here

you start by saying 'no you're wrong, that's not what p-mahnn meant' [paraphrase] then you go on to say every thing I said.

1) it's a sue happy world

2) the dr/responsible party should cover all costs and the man should get proper treatment this time so he can get on with his life

are we in agreement that there is no reasonable excuse for a million $ lawsuit if the man is taken care of at no expense to himself?

probably not be cause you assert that the dr should be punished ("sued for negligance" is the term from the article)

well, that's debatable, I mean if you build a motor and it blows up 2 miles later you'd be expected to make it right but would it be a black mark on your record? I doubt if one bad motor out of thousands would fuck up your career.

also, to the issue of the dr telling the guy it's ok to go home and work in the garden, I didn't read that part in the article. For all we know he explicetly told this old man to go home and rest for several days and the old fucker decided he was strong as a mule and went back to work pushing wheel barrows and lifting potted plants.

are you saying you accept the lawsuit inevitablility and you think it's the only just way to handle this under the present social system?

or are you saying it's going to happen, like it or not?

BTW: I see EXACTLY what p-mahnn is saying and I think I summe dit up succinctly. But I'll elaborate for your benefit.
This woman's immediate reaction to the horrible image is to become a fucking victim and strike back at someone with the powers that tax her. Her answer was to automatically sue and that's bullshit. No one has a chance to make their mistakes right anymore because ppl feel weak and frightened by the laws they allow to rule them. It is a disgusting display and the newspaper makes it common.

Most of me says "yes".

probably not be cause you assert that the dr should be punished ("sued for negligance" is the term from the article)

I never once said he should be sued and never implied it. I said he should have to pay and I covered "what" in my last paragraph.

See above?

*goes back to read what I wrote*

Wut?

Because I'm too stupid to understand otherwise? I had you covered from the beginning dumbass. :p

He shouldn't have been working in the garden.
He got fixed.
The doctor should sue him for not following instructions and not using common sense.

Keep suing the doctors.
Some of you may regret that some day.

There are a quite a few doctors in Illinois have up and left the state, or simply the practice all together because of this fuckery.

Sue for paid medical bills, and any lost wages. That makes perfect sense. However suing for some crazy amount of money because of "emotional trauma" is bullshit. Money != no more trauma and should therefor not be awarded.

Whatever, I hate everything.

Shit, I think the insurance companies should be suing some of these people for not following doctors orders and causing or contributing to their problems.
I think that anyone taking advantage of the system, faking medical problems and filing frivolous lawsuits should be sued for huge amounts, just like the doctors are.
I think lawyers that propagate this sort of behavior or represent clients that are simply trying to work the system should be sued like doctors are, for millions.
Let the lawyers pay big bucks for malpractice insurance and let them be sued for malpractice.
The bullshit they put on the public has done far more damage than the doctors do.
