some editorial about white reporters (http://www.pasadenastarnews.com/Stories/0,1413,206~11851~2104373,00.html)
the statement I want to comment on
When a white person screws up, it ignites a debate on the screw up. When a black person screws up, it ignites a debate on race.
I am forced to believe that prejudice would exist anyway in mankind if the above described condition did not exist but I'd sure like to see the concept of pointing out that someone is "black" "white" "mexican" "asian" "female" etc die a quick death in the next generation. Not some hippie commune colorless utopian society, mind you. Just one where your first response to describe some one isn't "the black guy"
I am afraid that the very defined "ethic appreciation" efforts to prove that we are all equal only serve to remind us that we are all different.
Somewhere, someone is saying "but they've been so beaten down by the white man that they don't believe in themselves" insinuating that hispanic-american-week is to teach the mexican kids that they too can be great americans DESPITE being mexican
in my mind (which has it's flaws) telling me that someone with some kind of addendum attached to the end of their accomplishment means that it was a note worthy obstacle.
like that little girl who won an olympic medal in gymnastics despite a broken leg (or whatever injury)
you think "WOW! she was good enough to win even with an injury"
so when I tell you about Madam Currey you think "WOW she was smart even though she was a woman."
(you're supposed to realise that she was smart AND used her smarts despite having "unique" restrictions placed on her by society due ONLY to her gender)
anyway, "oh my god he's black, think of the socio-political problems involved with this" is a farse.
If we're ready to take the next step in human equality it's time to realise that everyone fucks up; even non-male/non-european-decended ppl.
or something like that
