My Norton service expires today. I can either resubscribe or seek alternatives. Preferrably free.

Any suggestions?

Go to free.grisoft.cz and download AVG freeware. Excellent anti-virus protection with regular, automatic updates.

Yeah, you could use AVG for viruses. And for basic firewall functionality, if you are running xp, it's built in. You can configure it from the control panel, networks, choose the interface, advanced.

Wut they said.

The AVG is killer and finds Trojans that my Norton or McAfee never did and it’s free!

I use XP’s firewall but as Big-T said, it’s basic. I personally use Sygate’s personal firewall (another freebie) and it blocks or closes the ports that XP doesn’t.

Both of which update regularly and you can set it so it automatically does it but you have to be connected during. Otherwise, you just open either one of them, check for and download updates.

I also use AVG because my Norton's subscription ran out. I am very happy with it.

.....torque will know more about this probably, but when I said to me systems admin...

"Hey lookie at this one, AVG"

.....he mumbled something about refresh rates, and how trojans can disable a virus protection thingy way quick, if you don't catch it quick enough like.....

You're prolly right.

However, AVG is finding trojans that my McAfee won't. And that's running them at the same time.

Hey Mud, check this (http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/catalog/products/sku_list_za.jsp?lid=pdb_za1) out as well.

It's ZoneAlarm and seeing as how everybody has an award winning this and that now-a-dayz and each company is pushing sales, the freebie is embedded deep in the site but the link should take you directly to the free firewall.

I’m trying it now along with my Sygate (I believe in security even if I have to over do it). Going through some stuff, I’ve found some of my ports where still being scanned with the Sygate so I’m seeing what the ZoneAlarm will do to help.

Anywho, check it out.
