shot to death (http://cnews.canoe.ca/CNEWS/WeirdNews/2004/03/19/388320-ap.html)

DALLAS (AP) -- Dallas Zoo officials said they can't explain how a 300-pound gorilla escaped from its enclosure, injuring four people before it was shot to death.

Police evacuated an estimated 300 people from the zoo compound Thurday and killed Jabari, a 13-year-old western lowland gorilla, after it charged at officers.

Zoo workers armed with tranquilizer guns had pursued the animal through the forested jungles of the Wilds of Africa exhibit, but could not gain a clear shot, officials said.

"It tried to charge two of our officers, so we had to shoot it," Deputy Police Chief Daniel Garcia said. "You can imagine the pandemonium we had out here when he got loose. We felt terrible we had to put this animal down."

The injured included a mother and her toddler son. Rivers Noah, 3, was in fair condition at Children's Medical Center with multiple bites to his head and chest. His mother, Keisha Heard, 26, who was bitten on the legs, was in good condition at Parkland Memorial Hospital.

Cheryl Reichert suffered injuries to her upper left arm and was in good condition at Methodist Central Hospital, police said. The fourth injured person, a child, was treated at the scene.

Jabari was in the award-winning gorilla-conservation area, surrounded by a 16-foot concave wall, before the attack around 5 p.m. Some youths had reportedly teased Jabari shortly before.

"He had to have scaled the wall," said zoo director Rich Buickerood. But "this habitat is among the best in the country. This blows our minds."

He said he did not know why zoo employees, who were armed with pepper spray, did not use it on the gorilla.

The gorilla "was banging on the door and broke it down, then he jumped out," a witness, Diana Gonzalez, told television station WFAA. "He was growling and yelling."

She and several children escaped from the area without injury. Other zoo-goers hid inside a restaurant and the monorail surrounding the Wilds of Africa exhibit.

The zoo has been in financial straits and the nonprofit Dallas Zoological Society recently proposed a county takeover. Buickerood said last month that the zoo staff had been cut and maintenance postponed because of the fund shortage.

In 1998, a 25-year-old zookeeper was injured by a gorilla at the zoo after the door to the animal's cage was left open. That animal was captured with a tranquilizer dart.

Freedom, if only for a brief moment, is better than a lifetime of slavery.

GO GORILLA GO!

Slavery? The gorilla had a 2 acre habitat designed in the likeness of its natural habitat. It was provided with plenty of healthy food and fresh water and had nothing to fear from predators. It had no work to do, other than be a gorilla.

2 acres ain't shit.

Oh, and slavery isn't the right word. But I'm too lazy to edit my post.

2 acres is a very LARGE space for a single, captive, gorilla.

If slavery isn't the right word, what is?

That gorilla was opressed because of its lineage.

Where is the anti-gorilla defamation leaque when you need 'em?

abs0 is not a z00 conissoure ;)
I liked the dallas zoo, part of it is still old, but they where renovating the herpetarium which I hope is done, I will be going to see NEXT weekend.

zoo's I went to last year:

dallas zoo
ft worth zoo
houston zoo
san antonio zoo
ellen trout zoo, lufkin

(also Los Angeles zoo, but that's not in texas ya'll)

zoo's on my list for this spring & summer:

the newly remodeled caldwell zoo in tyler
cameron park zoo, waco
austin zoo

I also want to go back to the fisheries in athens

I met a fellow in a herp chat I go to who is a herpetologist at the Little Rock zoo, who said he'd walk me through behind-the-scenes (that'd be cool)

I'd like to make a trip to the gladys porter zoo in brownsville but that's a bit of a drive.

the texas zoo in victoria isn't much further than the san antonio zoo, I should go there.

I also went to the aquarium at fairpark in dallas and the natural history museum.

But I REALLY liked the san antonio zoo. that place is my absolute favorite so far.

Have you been to the Dallas World Aquarium? (http://www.dwazoo.com/default.html) It rocks so much more than the aquarium at fair park. We generally just hit the Ft. Worth zoo, but here in Tyler the Tiger Creek Wildlife Refuge (http://www.tigercreek.org/) is our favorite.

:p

I met and talked to the guy who started that tiger place about 8 or 9 years ago. I tryed to help him get some contacts but his wife sort of insulted everyone I had call him.
He was a pretty shifty guy anyway. BUt his comments made good sense to me, although I had to beat a summary out of him. he kept rambling on about tigers in private collections and how the zoos had no interest because they couldn't prove the genetics of th animal. It had to do with tigerlink.org (http://www.tigerlink.org/)

....but he was mostly just interested in going int o the tiger attraction business. I'm afraid that conservationists don't seem to be very friendly to one another Infact they seem to hate one another and think that everyone else is a quack.

I haven't been to TCWR in a few years but the last time I was there it was just rows of kennels with tigers in them. Have they actually added any exhibits?

Nope, I've never been to the dallas world aquarium but now it's on my list for next weekend. :)

Yes most of the tiger creek place is still relatively small. Supposedly they are saving to build their natural habitat, which will encompass about 50 acres I believe, but honestly it’s been a while since I’ve actually gone out there. Maybe I just like tigers? :eyebrow:

Sadly we are usually in the Dallas/Ft. Worth metroplex enough to satisfy our zoological needs. :bigok:

Yes. Me & PB checked it out while we were in Dallas for our honeymoon. It was hard to find. The building is nondescript with no eye catching signs or banners to help bring in the tourons. All nearby parking was for a fee. Admission was upwards of $20 per adult (ouch) and the exhibits inside, while very neat and interesting, just didn't seem to live up to the expectations set by the amount they charge to get in.

On a scale of 1 to 10, I give the Dallas World Aquarium a 5.93.

Hmm. When I went I parked for free in the World Aquarium parking, and only paid $10.95 for admission per adult. I do however agree that it is difficult to find if you don't know your way around the area well. A large billboard that you could see from the highway would be nice.
