k,
you've probably heard about Rush Limbaugh being addicted to prescription pain medicine and going to rehab. Well he has been accused of all kinds of crap. Dr Shopping/money laundering/drug trafficing/etc
I believe the DA is still trying to make an indictment against him....anyway.
Basically he said he was addicted to something which is legal with a prescription so unless they can prove he obtained it illegally I can't see what he would get in trouble for.
so, today I read an article about courtney love (http://www.news.com.au/common/story_page/0,4057,8914811%255E1702,00.html)
she's being charged with " being under the influence of a controlled substance."
apparently she was actually doing something ELSE illegal when she was arrested so they tacked that on.
when I think back to famous people, drugs and the law and I clearly recall Robert Downy Jr (http://www.bdtzone.com/news_details.asp?ID=19) in court every couple years being convicted of drug charges
(lots of probation for him)
He was actually charged with possesion....and the long string of stupid shit that happened afterwards.
Now, American Pop-Culture has had plenty of famous ppl who've been arrested for possession over the years but MOST of them seem to just announce they do drugs, go to rehab and never get in any legal trouble.
and I have to wonder why.
Granted they have to do something to be arrested.
So if they aren't trafficing in narcotics, or committing another crime to get them noticed, they SHOULD (theoretically) not get in trouble.
(by that I mean the drug storm troopers don't kick your door in at random and search you for drugs, thus propping up the door industry in this country )
Doesn't that work for everyone else?
Hmmmm
Theoretically, it does.
the problem seems to be that people on drugs (and drunk for that matter) do things that attract attention and get them in trouble.
but if illegal drugs are illegal then wouldn't admitting you do them be like admiting you robbed someone?
or is this where compassion comes into the scene?
well if we're so compassionate for drug users then why do so many ppl go to jail for having a roach in the ashtray of their car?
because they are bad people and the drugs are a good excuse to punish them and make us all safer?
burden of proof I guess.
the confession of someone who's responsible for millions of dollars in heroine and cocaine sales is not as good as 1 joint in the posssesion of some kid who couldn't afford an ounce if he got a bank loan.
well, think about it, the famous rich guy has no reason to steal....so it's ok for him to do drugs, he's paying for them.
