One week ago today I earned my point shoes in ballet. Getting them has taken twelve years of my life. Twelve years of stretching nearly every day, of wanting to be just that much better and of giving it my best. Tonight I got to wear the shoes that in the ballet world mean you can really start to say you are a dancer for the first time, even if it was only for the first few things we did at the barre. The sense of empowerment and joy was a little overwhelming in a way as I looked at the other girl who had just gotten her shoes and realized just what we had both earned. We smiled and did our best, she ended up hurting her knee and leaving class an hour early (she should be okay).

On top of that, the semester ended meaning finals are over and I'm done with just that much more towards graduating.

Anyways, that’s enough out of me, I’m just having one of those rare really good days, it makes me happy.

I remember way back in high school, how my girlfriend spoke of and boasted of her point shoes. With a few questions and returned enthusiastic answers, I learned the significance.

So with what understanding I do have of the matter, there’s nothing more appropriate than…………..

YOU GO GIRL!

Congrats really, seriously and honestly. I know where you’re coming from. ;)

Stupid Question #5 for the day:
what are the levels of shoes or what have you in ballet and what do you have to do to earn them?

Well I don’t know all the steps but I do know that she’s working toward steel toe boots and that you have to do a “potty do” to get them.

Ballet’s pretty simple. You start at around age four and then when you’re technically ready (meaning you’re good enough) and your body’s strong enough you go from soft shoes to point shoes. Point shoes just mean you can do more technical and advanced work. I’ve already been doing point style work for a few years but just now managed to make it to enough classes for my teacher to say I can go on point.
