in a letter i received in my school mailbox:

'The GreenPower America Program presented by the Go Green Team in co-operation with DFB Evirotech, LLC aims to be the largest school-based pollution prevention fundraiser in the country. The program's goal is to replace one million incandescent light bulbs with energy efficient Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFL's) nationwide. Reaching this goal would reduce our national electricity consumption by approcimately 55,000,000 kilowatt/hours which is the Hoover Dam's maximum operating capacity for 12 hours, and prevent 825,000,000 lbs. of carbon dioxide from entering our atmosphere from coal-burning power plants over the lifetime of CFLs.

The methods of the GreenPower America program are simple. The Go Green Team will partner with schools to make the CFLs available to their local communities through the participating students. Like many other school fundraisers, students will compete for prizes. Unlike other school fundraisers, participants in the GreenPower America program will compete to be among the top 20 students nationally who will receive their share of up to $500,000 in college scholarships for converting the most incandescent lamps to CFLs. The students will help their communities save on electricity, help fund their school or program, and lower levels of pulltuion in their area, all while learning from specially designed teambuilding, goal setting, and conservation curricula provided by the Go Green Team.

The schools themselves benefit as well. Each school that participates gets one third of the gross sales generated by the students of that school and
DFB will donate $1 to each CFL sale to the Go Green Team. Each lamp has been competitively priced at $9 to assure consumers that they are getting a quality product at an excellent price. Schools whose participants convert 1,000 CFLs total will raise $3,000 and have an additional $1,000 donated to the Go Green Team on behalf of their school or organization. These extra funds will be very useful in some of our cash strapped cities and towns.

This is simply an introductory letter and a request for your support. You will find much information about DFB Evirotech, LLC, the Go Green Team and the GreenPower America program at (the link posted above). We would like for you to visit the website and learn more about the Green Power America Program.

Sincerely,

Gino D Del Rosso, Program Director

The GreenPower America Program'

The light from CFL's is too harsh for home settings.

true, but i figure it's worth a shot. maybe some families are more concerned with their electricity bills than how they will look under a light.

basically, here's my reasoning for trying this:

1)- the reduction in pollution around our area (if BioEnergy succeeds in coming to this town and burning construction debris, we'll need another way to reduce pollution)

2)- the college scholarship shot- without scholarships, i have no chance of getting into a decent college. we simply can't afford to put another mason kid through college. fucking being the youngest.

3)- i forget. but there was a third. *smile*

Sounds like a good program. Now ask yourself this question: What is the energy and resource investment in producing a CFL as compared to an ordinary incandescent bulb?

Like the hybrid automobiles now being marketed, there are issues involved not readily apparent.

Most of the lights in my house are fluorescent. I’ve been replacing all the incandescent bulbs with CFL’s over time. Since they are relatively expensive, I pick up one here and there. The other lighting is tubular fluorescent fixtures. I use them for my own sake (power bill). I also like the fact that when you get up in the morning and flip the light on, the light is pretty dim at first until it warms up. They’re easy on the eyes.

But bet you’re hiney if everyone cut down power usage resulting in power companies profit loss, the rates would go up.

Not only should school fundraisers be illegal, so should assholes like these.

What a waste of time, money, and enthusiasm.
