I have the honor of doing all the xmas shite giving this year. I'm not broke, basically. Were it otherwise, there'd simply be no stereotypical Christmas here.
I hate teh xmas.
I hate teh debt, too, but I sorta owe the parents for a 14 year backlog of present-getting. My sister excluded, I'm the only person left in the family who ever does any good things for 'em.
That tends to make ya feel unwanted and insignificant, I suppose, so I try to do more nice things than you'd generally expect to compensate. *shrug*
Having semi-elderly parents and knowing that what time and opportunity you get is rare and tenuous at best makes it all the more important.
For something that sorta has to be done, it still leaves me happy. :)

Thought Xmas had been officially cancelled this year.
*acts confused*
I hate the ppl who run around like they've lost their goddamn minds and can't figure out how to show love and appreciation without ridiculous gifts and things that involve $$$$$
ppl who think life in general and christmas especially involve STRESS
there's nothing wrong with a time of year when you stop to tell ppl close to you that you are thinking about them and you care.
of course, then you have to actually "care" about them.
but that's why you stop once in a while and say thank you to those who show they care.
so do what little you can of the bullshit, like gift giving, and make the most of the important stuff that leaves you happy...which in this case may be gift giving
:D

Nanya and Nay spent the night with their Mimi last night. The phonecall I got this morning was candy for a sweet tooth.
Mimi doesn't get very many chances to see her little sprites. She usually has to make due with stories about their antics.
This morning, she had her own stories to tell.
Last night, Holly found one of her presents under Mimi's tree, begged for hints about what it was and accordingly drew the attention of her little brother.
The gift remained unopened but the sparkle of the Christmas Tree lights on its surface held fast in Nathan's dreams.
Under the cloak of darkness, he ripped into the package to quell his sister's sadness (ie, snuck out and opened the present).
Once torn, wrapping has but one use; RIPPAGE!
And so, the halls of Mimi's Condo rang clear with songs announcing the arrival of Barbie/Swan Lake!
At first, Mimi was disappointed that the kids didn't wait for Christmas day.
"Would you rather hear stories about the happiness or see it for yourself", I asked.
I had stories of my own to tell. One centered on our daughters; hers and mine.
"My girls make good choices", said she.
"I'll need your help", said I.
"I'll advise Holly until it's time for to make her own decisions."
"Hahhaha! One of yours got me!"
My Mother-In-Law told me that I was a good choice for her daughter.
I can't ask for a greater gift than that.
Now that I think about it, a hovercraft would be cool.

My mother's side of the family has always held a christmas eve get together. My aunts and uncles with all of my cousins got together Christmas eve and ate a feast, visited for a few hours, sang christmas carols and generally enjoyed each other's company. The climax of the night was when "Santa" would ring the doorbell and bring presents for all of the kids while we sang christmas carols.
As the years went on, the aunts and uncles sort of fell apart. Tensions between the kids and the parents ( mainly my sister, myself and my mom ) pretty much ended the Christmas eve tradition about 10 years ago. I got a call from my cousin Shelly a week ago. She wants to start up the family gathering again. She wants it to be with the cousins and their families. I was leary at first but am finding myself more and more excited. There are quite a few little kids that will be there and, if I remember correctly, that's what Christmas is all about.

My grandmother and grandfather (I was raised by gramma) - had 4 children +1. They had HUGE,ELABORATE Christmas' with TOO MUCH under the tree...the biggest fucking mammoth of a tree ALWAYS and because it got bigger and bigger it needed more and more decorations each year. It was a matter of "keeping up with the Jones'." My grandmother hated it when my grandfather would do this and she knew damn well that this type of mentality would be etched into her kids heads. Now my two uncles are always one upping the other. The aunts spend WAY too much mother trying to find that perfect gift and the holidays because this huge pissing contest.
Mike and I wrapped our 3 gifts (each) with the flyers that come on Saturday mornings. We are going to BBQ steak on the "day" and then go and see a movie.
Of course before the BBQ and the movie we'll be visiting with friends and neighbours and relaxing with them and sharing and talking and remembering and planning for the year to come.
Christmas is good if you make that way, and visa versa...
And at New Years, make sure to tell everyone you'll catch them on the flip side. :)

I helped "escort" my wife to an ambulance last friday.
The three wise men (shrink, lawyer and judge) decide on Xmas day if she's going to have to stay in the funny farm for a little longer.
I'm not hanging around for the decision, I'm fucking off to London for a drink.
Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way.
Luvvly snow.
