So I'm reading the newspaper (yes, I do that) and on page 10 of Health & Fitness is an article about the modernization of Electroconvulsive Therapy (http://www.psycom.net/depression.central.ect.html).
Cavemen.
Basically, "We don't know what it does but it keeps people from killing themselves".
I know! How about a study centered on the proper procedure for jamming an icepick into the brain through the eye-socket without damaging the eye?
Oh. Right. Already done.
The good news is that the patients don't thrash around like they did in the early '40s. Must have upset too many people administerring the "treatment" so now drugs paralyze the patient's muscles beforehand. Great.
You're talking about people who are desperate, who are often suicidal, who have just about lost it all.

Some solution there, doc.
