I used Photoshop on it, but the result is somewhat crappy.

Not that I can tell, man. Damned good work on yer part, IMO. Now get to coloring and texturing, bish! :)

A half-assed job I guess. I'm going to try using Photoshop again on a different picture. This time carefully, patiently doing it. I never made any layers in this one :\ The thing I'm glad with most is the stretch I put in his robe/skirt cloth piece of clothing. It also kinda looks like he's feeling himself.

Layers, blend modes, more layers, etc etc....will take ya a while. :p
What's this 'blend mode'?
[edit: i think i found it it : Blend Options. What a bunch of mumbo jumbo it is :)]

I'm doing a really quick and halfassed job to give ya an idea of the 'basecoat' you might wanna aim for, depending on the results yer looking for - 'fraid my version's the white knight, tho. :p

nothing special
Nice. I like the blade of the lance.
So what did ya do? This is what I'm thinking.
1) Take the out line picture, divide it into parts (your call) and make layers for each part. For example, you made a layer for his fore arm? Then make other layers for different parts.
Did you use the magic wand (with anti aliasing off)? I used it to select parts like one of his forearms, then I colored it in and used burn/dodge tool for shading and high lights. One thing I forgot to do (and something I should of remembered) is turn anti-aliasing off. Plus, I didn't make any layers at all.
What's pissing me off is some little white spots that appear when I'm done. Like in between spots. I believe it's the anit aliasing.
*shrugs*
At some spots I tried making different textures like leather straps but that didn't go over well. Would I do something like that after said 'base coat'?
[ps. I also tried getting rid of the black out line somewhat using the smudge too.]
