Nfld. group hug falls short of Guinness world record - 4,635 short
POUCH COVE, Nfld. (CP) - Well, it was the biggest hug ever in Pouch Cove, possibly even all of Newfoundland.
But organizers of a Guinness Book of Records attempt at the world's largest group hug fell short Sunday. They needed more than 4,703 people to participate in the communal clasp to break the current record. They got 69. "It would be nice but 4,000 people is a lot of people," said Isabelle Fry, an organizer of Miss Teen Newfoundland and Labrador, one of the sponsors of the event.
"We'll try again next year. We're looking at the world's largest pillow fight."
The weather worked against them, as a few rain drops began to fall just before 4 p.m., the designated hugging hour.
When they first came up with the idea and applied to Guinness, the record was less than 700. That has since been shattered by Boy Scouts attending a massive jamboree in Sweden.
"I don't think we won," said Darhen Sing, 11, who came to the water park with her family and said she had fun anyway.
The event was organized to raise awareness and collect food for the Community Food Sharing Association.
Father Chris Snow, an Anglican priest and chairman of the association, thanked everyone who took part.
"Even though there aren't many folks here today and the organizers were apologizing to me. . .even small amounts, even small donations, are valuable to us," Snow said.
In order to qualify for the record, organizers must apply in advance and sign a contract with Guinness. On Sunday, everyone who participated had to sign up, witnessed by two people.
"I think we set the record for Pouch Cove," said David Snow, owner of the family amusement park where the hug took place. "It was fun."
But organizers haven't given up.
"We're thinking of doing something every year, maybe calling it Guinness weekend and try and eventually get a world record for something," Snow said.
The record for the largest pillow fight is 645 people, set at Anderson County Courthouse Square in Gannet, Kansas, in June.
