View Full Version : How even good television may be bad

I just caught the tail end of one of those forensic shows on the discovery channel. It occurred to me that if a person was contemplating the murder(s) of people, and have half a clue, they could sit there and watch similar shows to try to gain knowledge of how to get away with such deeds.

Now, I enjoy this type of programming. The science involved in solving crime is defiantly a cool thing. But, do any of you see the same thing I do here? Or am I just giving the human race to much credit?

And as a tangent, are there any other shows/types of shows that can fall into this trap?

Information always has been and always will be a double-edged sword. Take for example posting security exploits for computers - posting them allows sysadmins to close potential security threats, but also allows others to learn of the exploits and either try them out or learn to modify them to new threats.

Or the guy at Princeton who designed a nuclear bomb from declassified info.

Or simply your local library. Information is not in itself a bad thing, it's what the info is used for that get us, and there is always going to be some dickhead that exploits knowledge for misuse. My thoughts, anyway.

Just to clarify things, I', all for information being free and accessible. It's one of the precepts of this place, no? And sorry to any who may have thought otherwise based on my opening statements.

There are a lot of criminals that do not, and will not, get caught. You don't think about that because you are not hearing about every person that got away with a crime in newspapers, TV, and shit. You wont see segments on people that get away from the police on Cops. Car chases for which the suspect gets away wont be shown on FOX. Some people have the driving skills to use their, probably nice, car good enough to remove police from the mirrors. Some people know how to commit crimes flawlessly. It's the dumb bastards, that don't seem to care or realize how serious a crime can be, that get caught. Some of those dumb ass bitches seem to want you to know, how sad is that? I cant believe that this affection starved bastard lets that shit mess up the whole likeliness of they're being able to remain out of jail for one particular crime. These dedication lacking idiots don't deserve to get away with anything, maybe if the lazy fucker went to work instead of steal he would have the dedication to (but no need to) commit a crime and not get caught.

I'd like to say that the cop killers from this week will not get caught, not all, if any. Killing police officers is not such a bad thing, they (the cops) make it out to be. When a cop with a wife and a kid gets killed.. what's the big deal? What the fuck are they doing gambling with their life by being a cop if having a family is so great? Would everyone be happier if a cop hat lives alone and thinks of suicide every night gets killed on the job? NO! Both funerals would be the same. Fuck a cop and his family, if every cop, his wife, kid, and wimpy pet, that I have ever met weren't assholes with no real friends then maybe I would think differently about it and hope that that one rare cop that isn't an asshole to everyone he meets doesn't get killed on the job, but not really. They wear bulletproof vests, that helps nothing. Movies don't show people getting shot in the head too too often but it happens and i'd shoot a cop in his fucking face -- not when he walks to the side of my truck, i'd go to his fucking house when he's off duty and let him answer the door and distract him while I reach for the gun and shoot him in the eye (reference) at a range just far enough away to be sure that he wont have a chance to try and stop me, (like i'd go to do this by myself, bring more people with more guns and lots of a gas/styrofoam mixture) cause after he is shot there is a minute to kill any family around the house and set the place on fire with napalm and disperse in the truck to get to other cars waiting down the road. That may be too much work to put into something like that but it could work. Some would say that nobody deserves that but others might kill someone for saying that. Fuck, I forgot the paragraph breaks, I have a feeling you still read it though.

I primarily watch tlc, discovery and the history channel. I was watching a program on one of them about bomb squads. There was a segment of the program on home made explosives. The narrator addressed this very issue directly by saying they would not reveal any information about their actual construction in order to prevent people from using information they provided to hurt themselves or others. Whether this decision was made to avoid liability or out of actual concern for viewers is of course suspect.

What pisses me off is the shows with some smuck mixing a bunch of shit he got at the local grocery store (all ingredients in plain view) stuffing it in a pipe adding a fuse and blowing up half a city block. To me that is irresponsible. Some fucking moron is going to try it and who knows they might get lucky and actually make an explosive. Personally I don't give a fuck if they blow themselves into tiny little pieces(dead idiots=good)but my kid might be near by.

RW, I have to contest your aobve statements. There are a few channels that have good programming, maybe too few, but that's another thread.

Televison programming does exist that has more depth than a piece of flan. A prime example of this is "Walking with Dinosuars" THat Discovery aired a while back, and recently re-aired. Not only was it narrated by Avery Brooks, a Rutgers Prof. , But it was also one of the most technically demanding projects that the station has ever undertaken. So, it was a rewarding watch from a informative aspect, in addition to being the potential impetus for younger viewers to seek out info on just how the show was made. Were I 7 years old again, I'd want to know how they got all these long extinct creatures to seem so alive.

to paraphrase Mulder... "The good stuff is out there"

And dont even get me started on how good Farscape is... mmmmm... Chiana and Zaan.... yummy.
