Rule #1: Schedules for the following week are to be submitted by department heads Tuesday.
Rule #2: Modifications by management must be completed before Noon Friday.
Rule #3: Employees have 24 hours to review schedules and dispute seniority issues.
Fair enough.
So, on July 24, Sid learned that our daycare would be closed beginning Friday, August 1. One of us needed to be off to take care of the kids. I called management, described the situation and was asked to see about making arrangements before requesting the day off. I reminded management that I was (and still am) owed two days off from May that we mutually agreed to postpone for emergencies. The issue went neglected until I brought it up to my department head and immediate supervisor on the morning of Monday, July 28.
"You're scheduled off Thursday, right?"
"Normally. I'm willing to switch."
"Nah. In fact, I can give you Saturday and Sunday off, too, if you want."
"Uh, that's a bit greedy. I'm just worried about Friday."
"*Shrug* I just figured it'd be a good opportunity to have four days off in a row if you want."
"Well, ok, I guess."
"Yeah, go spend some time with your family."
"Ok, then, if you're sure it won't put us in a bind."
"We're always in a bind. Don't worry about it."
On Wednesday, July 30, management calls me at home.
"I understand you'd be willing to work Thursday. We could use the help."
"Sure. I'll be there."
And I was.
At 6:00 AM, Friday, July 31, I reviewed the schedule to be posted at noon. Sure enough, I was scheduled off Saturday and Sunday.
At the beginning of my Monday shift, I looked at the schedule to get an idea of how the shift should proceed. That's when I noticed that my schedule had been changed. Sometime between 6am Friday and noon, my Sunday off and Tuesday on were swapped. The erasures are difficult to miss.
When my supervisor showed up, the first words out of his mouth were that our department head was out to "bust your balls for not showing up Sunday. He said it's your responsibility to check the final posting."
"You do recall that conversation, don't you?"
"Yeah. I reminded him about it."
"I saw the schedule before I left Friday morning. I was scheduled to work from Monday thru Friday. Get your good eye over there. You can see the erasure."
I hate self-inflicted problems. I hate double-standards just as much. Officially, I'm required to give them "several hours notice" if I can't work a shift. Current management demands two weeks. I gave them as much notice as I had. Anything more would have required a psychic. In return, I got no notice whatsoever; only the sound of a pencil erasing a couple of numbers and someone questioning my sense of responsibility.
I'm steamed.
