I see no indication of motion. Nor do I see a driver. That leads me to believe that the truck is parked and the armadillo is weighing options.

If the armadillo had been thinking, "fuck it, it's not worth the risk", you'd be looking at a fair representation humanity's general outlook.

The two sides of the road are Now and Future. The truck represents Danger. It's worth noting that armadillos aren't on the endangered species list. Nor are Astronauts.

Arkansas Speedbumps.

There are 3 species of armadillos, the 9 banded (what we have in the southern US), the 6 banded and the 3 banded. Only the 3 banded can curl into a complete ball.

9 banded, 6 banded, 3 banded......

Ball or no

They can still go *squish*.

Wouldn't it be a crunch? We don't have armidillos here, so I've never hit one...
But beetles with hard backs go crunch not squish, so wouldn't armidillos go crunch?

Armadillos armor isn't quite as hard as perceived. It’s plenty tough, but it’s not like a turtle shell (which is relatively soft also). Most of the one’s you see flattened on the highway, the armor is actually torn, not broken into pieces.

I wouldn't know anything about armadillos...I've never been drunk enough to talk to one

they're just for eating

and I think the cartoon is pointing out that coating ignorance with determination still leads to failure

we all know what happens when little animals step in front of trucks
yet they continue to do it

The "armor" of an armadillo is more like thick leather segments.
I dont see where you could call a turtle shell soft (except for the softshelled turtle) since the shell is bone. Basically, it is the ribcage of the animal, the ribs have flattened out and fused together to form the shell.
The softshelled turtle is only soft because the ribs have a few gaps that other turtles don't and has a skin that extends beyond the bone structure.

Note that I said “relatively soft”. I’ve captured enough different kinds of turtles, killed them and used their shells for various things to know. Freshly killed, the shell is somewhat flexible and all bendy, especially when you get all the guts out. I’ve never even picked up a turtle that you couldn’t bend or squeeze the shell...some. Now leave the shell to “dry out” for week or so, it’s like a thin brick and can be broken like a china plate. If you boil it, it’s like rubber (which is true for all bone).
