I cannot imagine...
I just am horrified.
Hacked Off Hands get re-attached (http://www.canoe.ca/CalgaryNews/cs.cs-06-13-0040.html)
TORONTO -- As Madiline Monast awoke after surgery that re-attached the hands that had been hacked off by a crazed neighbour, she greeted her family with a smile.
"That's the way she is." said Monast's sister Dawn Irwin. "Then she said, 'so much for the painting job.' She and her kids were going to do some painting for me on Saturday. We were going to have a big party."
Monast, 44 -- the mom of five kids aged 11 to 24 and grandmother of one -- was attacked inside her townhouse, allegedly by a machete-wielding neighbour, Wednesday afternoon.
"Both hands are on. The right one doesn't look too promising but they're hopeful about the left one," Irwin said. "I just hope the woman who did this can never get near her again."
It was the second time the neighbour had allegedly attacked Monast -- she was charged with assaulting Monast with a beer bottle last July, police said.
The accused woman, a 38-year-old mother of five, four of whom were seized by the Children's Aid Society, appeared briefly in court yesterday.
She is expected in court for a bail hearing today. "She's fit to stand trial as far as I know. A court mental worker spoke to her this morning before I arrived," said defence lawyer Marshall Sack.
"She's just lost her husband."
Neighbours said Monast was "loved" by everyone in the complex.
Monast was attacked moments after police and Children's Aid Society workers seized four children from her next-door neighbour's home.
The neighbour believed Monast had called CAS, police said. But the society's executive director Bruce Rivers said the tip was from "a caller who was not the neighbour."
