I need a dog.
I'm thinking of getting a staffy. One without papers would be nice, not so inbred.
Get out of the house every once in a while and all that.

I used to have a truck.
But it died.
Dogs are cool...for the most part.
They have to be the right kind of dog. The only dog I've been a fan of that is tiny (drop-kickable) is the dog on frasier. They just seem fun.
Other than that, I am a fan of mid-large sized dogs. Labs, Boxers, german shepards, etc. They are fun, active, and can protect well. Plus, they're fun as puppies and can give little babies rides around on their backs as they get older. http://www.thehypertribe.net/ubb/biggrin.gif

One more thing...
Only get a dog if you can be there for it. Treat it like you would a child. Dogs with no play buddies are not cool dogs at all. They are the ones that bark all day, and snip at little kids and old ladies.

i have a dalmatian. don't get a dalmatian. they are known to be the stupidest breed of dog, something that i can attest to, which is understandable because of the immense amount of inbreeding necessary to get dogs to have goddamn polka dots.

My mother and aunt raised Rottweilers and Fila Brasilaros (laaaaaaaarge mastiff)
They did very intense training.
They cost a lot of $.
They ate alot.
She also took in every stray that came along for the better part of my youth.
They ate alot and were always up your ass when you went outside.
Everytime I bonded with one. It died or got sick.
So Fuck it.
When I get ready for a dog I am going to pick out the dog I want.
Until then they'll wander up and I will feed them till they get sick or get shot.
The only reason I will feed them until then is that about 1 in 100 dogs is actually a GOOD dog and you never know which one that will be until you get to meet them.

I had a doberman for a year, she was brilliant, most intelligent animal I've ever met. Her mother was a champion and her father was a packet of semen from the states.
For some reason none of the tan came out in her coat, so she was jet black and paperless.
I used to take her for runs and she'd run beside me jumping up and kissing my checks.
Took her for a run in the country at night once, bad mistake, couldn't see her kisses coming, ended up coming home with a fat lip.
Body surfing with her was also a bad move, scatched the fuck out of me.
Miss that dog.
Can't say I like ear cropping.
1 in 100 a good dog? I'd say 1 in a 100 is a bad dog, maybe a lot more are useless dogs, but a real bad seed you don't often come across. Plenty of asswipe owners though.

Get a boxer. You can't have them in the house, but they have a good temprement, they are good guard dogs without being too big, and they are good with kids................

My dog is a pit bull, black labrador mix. He's great, well behaved and very loving. Quite smart, when he's not playing dumb to avoid having to get his lazy ass up out of the sunbeam through the back window.

Okay, I am not going to discourage you from getting a dog. I have two, they are great. But both have been adopted from the pound, one of them was an adult when I got her. Someone gave her up and I can't imagine why, she is lovely and gentle and the best friend I could have. So when I read that you would like to get out of the house every once in awhile I felt compelled to remind you that owning a dog is alot of hard work.
I usually spend about 3 hours a day with them, walking, playing, grooming, going to the dog park. They are expensive. Food, shots, vet care, toys, grooming supplies, training - all of those costs big bucks. Sometimes they destroy things like shoes and furniture. I have to walk them rain or shine, sick or healthy, I cannot just take off for the weekend without them or making sure they are cared for. It's like having children!
I am quite passionate about this because my neighbour bought two lovely puppies last spring and then proceeded to ignore them. He got them for security and they sit in the backyard 24-7 in all types of weather. The yard is destroyed, filled with mud and shit and the dogs are often covered with the stuff. I have seen them walked no more than 10 times in the past year. One dog is epileptic, and another is frequently injured and limping, I do not know if he beats it or what. My neighbours and I will be going to court this spring because the owner will not plead guilty and pay a fine for his dogs barking around the clock. The SPCA has been called and they have investigated the neglect and abuse but they really can't (and won't) do much. These dogs have miserable lives and I feel terrible about it every day as I pass by with my dogs as we go for walks.
Now having said all that, I would suggest doing a little breed research to decide what you are looking for in a dog. Then choose a breed that meeds your requirements, don't just choose a dog because you like the way it looks.
I would also suggest looking for your dog at animal shelters and pounds. You can find both purebreds and cross-breeds there, puppies and adults. It's a very nice feeling to save a dog's life. I stopped by for weeks until I met my collie Chelsea, and I really believe she chose me as much as I chose her.
My dogs give me joy everyday, they make me laugh, they drive me nuts. They are good for my soul...

Cheers Inky for the comments.
To begin it's not my first dog, the last one we had we were the tenth owners, it was a smart little fucker, but would eat any other male dog it met. We swore the next one we had would be female and a puppy.
What I am holding in my hand in my last post is a result of good fortune. It is a Belgium bastard which arrived in my town last weekend with 7 other pups, she was the only female and is a dead ringer for our last one, white socks, white shirt, black suit etc.
I know it's uncle and met the mother, so fate is sealed for the next 15 or so years.
It spent last night chewing my ear when ever I had the audacity to try and sleep and is already housetrained (maybe).

<FONT COLOR="limegreen"> I too am looking for a dog. I have always had dogs in my life and I feel lonely in my apartment without one. I originally. My first dog was a golden lab with the heart of a saint from the time she was a puppy till she dies at age two (car accident) she was the most gentle dog I have ever in my life known. A year after getting her we got a dalmation (this was aboutthe time 101 dalmations came out and dalmations were as the say 'in style') We actually rescued her from a abusive owner when she was 10 weeks old. he beat her because she didnt listen. she was deaf. she grew up with our lab and learned to cope with he 'deafness' by using our lab as her replacement ears... whenever she slept she made sure she was next to someone by the time she was 6 months she know how to sit and come with hand signals... when our lab died we knew that we needed another dog or our dalmation wouldnt be able to cope. so we wnet and got two puppies from the pound .... yes two!!! a brother andd sister pair. all of my dogs have ment sooooo much to me they grew up in our house as the 'three stooges' and they were (even bobbing each other on the head for goofy reasons)
Pets are great.. They keep us young and happy. but they also require lots of care. I also had one other pet when I first moved out and was living in my first apartment a bf of mine gave me a puppy he got from the pound. and I love him dearly he was the cutest little thing ( a beagle mix) but shortly after I got him I had to move. And as he got bigger I realized that he wasnt a apartment kinda dog. he kept getting bigger and more energetic i walked him as much as i could but when i wasnt home he was distructive. As much as i loved him I ended up having to give him away (to a very loving family with kids and a big backyard.
Moral here. the pound is a great place to get a dog ... but do your research too. make sure you find a dog that matches your lifestyle. I actually looking for a new dog myself Ive done alot of research and i *think* ive found a breed that will do perfect for me. A miniature pinscher, (if anyone knows and good breeders let me know) I found that they are small and actually very very good in apartments. they need minimaul excercise and grooming which is good for me. I also found they are very protective dogs. which is good for me because i live alone.
Anyways, my point is take your time. Finding a pet is basically like finding a best friend that you care for like it was your child. You to find one that is right for you not only now but for as long as the pet lives.

Small in amount or degree.
Only barely adequate.
Often Minimal. Of, relating to, or being minimalism.
so minimal excercise, very little excersice, small amounts of excercise. Opposite of needing lots of excercize.
In other words. since i dont have alot of time the dog wouldnt need to be walked 5 times a day; once or twice would prolly be enough to keep it healthy.

Those Fila Brasileiros are incredible dogs, not to mention very rare and expensive. My friend has two of them. Without a doubt, they are the ULTIMATE guard dog. However, they can turn out to be an absolute nightmare if they aren't properly socialized from day one. Even when properly socialized, they tend to be a little too aggressive towards other dogs and strangers (whether they be friendly or not).
If I were to recommend the best all-around dog, I would be hard-pressed to recommend anything other than a Doberman Pinscher. Their bad reputation comes from unethical breeders. A properly bred and socialized Doberman is just as friendly and docile as any other breed of dog out there. They are also one of the smartest, and easiest to train breeds of dogs. They are extremely fast and agile, very loyal and obedient, and are among the best guard/watch dogs of all the breeds. Very rarely will a Dobe stray more than five feet from it's owner. They will literally follow you from room to room, which can get a little annoying every once in a while.
Much like the Fila Brasileiro, a Dobe can turn into a complete nightmare if not properly socialized. They require a large amount of activity. If you are not an active person, this is not the breed for you. They LOVE to run, so they make great jogging partners. Keeping them indoors too long without enough exercise will result in extremely undesirable behavior.
