I heard it was a good book from a buncha military types. I will pick it up soon.
I saw the movie. I somewhat enjoyed it. I saw it as a satire. Somepeople thought it was just another action movie.

Easy there, Wil. Flame elsewhere.
Have you read it? Seen the movie?
Please, I beg each and every one of you to refrain from making comparisons between the screen version and the mind version. When you read a book, you paint an image inside your mind. When you watch a movie, someone else paints an image on the surface or your mind.
It's not that difficult to pick up a book and fall into it. The words that the author chooses will compliment your perception and will allow you to see from someone else's mind.
Imagine for a moment that you have been frozen for centuries and awakened in the distant future. The political structure you were used to has morphed. Technology has augmented physical and mental abilities by leaps and bounds.
Did I just paint a picture inside your mind?
Get the book. I'll be happy to share the images and thought it gave me.
Go!

I tried that in 7th grade with "The Illustrated Man" and got ripped to shreds on the details. On the upside, my teacher died of kidney failure half-way through the year.
Bastard. He video-taped the oral reports and played them back to point out faults.
I'd better stop here before I start making associations to "The Wall".
In short, no. The book and the movie are two seperate works. One does not accurately represent the other.

<BLOCKQUOTE><HR>It is, in my humble opinion, one of the most important philosphical treatises on morality in the future[/quote]
<FONT SIZE=2 COLOR="#ff0000">Fucking awful.
Tripe interspersed with 3 page ramblings of Heinlein's skewed totalitarian and fascist morality.
I remember feeling embarrassed for the man when I first read this knowing that everyone would be laughing at him for his transparant morality manifesto he inserted into the book.
Don't read it unless it is to save someone's life and even then, think hard about doing it.</FONT>

AHA! Goatboy has just inadvertently provided incentive.
"Don't read this..." has the opposite effect more often than not.
It was written for prepubescent boys seeking adventure in the stars. Perhaps the real analysis shouldn't center on the storyline, but on the intent.
I read it for the first time as an adult. Since it was written by an adult, I haven't the advantage of ignorance that youth provides.
Goatboy, you seem to know it well. Trash it at will but do so with specifics. I would be interested in reading a convincing argument from you instead of a drive-by review.

<FONT SIZE=2 COLOR="#ff0000">Less chance of being hit in a drive by.
I agree that the books target audience were boys looking for 'adventure amongst the stars'
I also think that the book is dated, but good for it's era.
It is in no way, shape or form is it an 'important philosphical treatises on morality in the future'. (http://www.asylumnation.com/ubb/Forum6/HTML/002106.html)
He was obviously clumsily inserting his own skewed victorian values into the book. Beyond those occasional forays into bad taste, I thought the book was good. It was and perhaps remains, the premier example of the armed forces - science fiction genre.
Read with tongue in cheek and a hand full of salt.

I'll start by addressing the core of Goatboy's comment.
Leonardo Davinci didnot paint with an airbrush.
Nor did the Wright Bros use carbonfiber to built and airplane chasis.
Heinlein started with what he had.
I think your reading a lot into that.

<FONT COLOR="TimeSlipping">I think that trying to portray morality in the future is an excisise in futility. As values change. We can only impose what our minds can accept onto the vision of the future. Could you see a 15th century Spaniard understanding the moralities of today? I can't. Oh well. Fuck it. From my shelf, I watched Brown General bite into a roach this morning. She offered up the carcass as food for her brood and moved away with her ranks in the direction of the wasp nest. Before she left, she regurgitated into my jar to provide me with nutrients.
We need fireflies for the next phase.
