Snide Remarks #342
"The Nayme Gaimme"

by Eric D. Snider

Published in The (Provo, Utah) Daily Herald on January 19, 2003

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you're like me, you think it's funny that a lot of people have goofy names. If you're not like me, you're one of the people coming up with the goofy names. One of us needs to change his ways, and I think it's you, JuDee.

I write this with the knowledge that I am in danger of offending people I know and like. I have friends with absurd names, and some who have given their children absurd names. The extraordinarily snobbish diatribe that is about to follow should in no way be construed as evidence that I have less than warm feelings for these people, or for the children whose lives they have ruined with cruel names like "JayceSun."

Now, I like fun as much as the next guy -- unless the next guy is Pete Townshend, because hoo-boy, I can't keep up with him! -- but I draw the line at making child-naming time wacky creative fun time. Certain activities are meant to be boring. It means you're doing them right. These include school plays, service projects and naming your children. If fun should break out during any of these undertakings, you should stop immediately and start again.

You see, one of the goals of parenthood -- I am generalizing here -- is that your children will live into adulthood. And if that should happen, and you've saddled him or her with an absurd name -- one that you made up or intentionally misspelled -- then what have you done to his or her chances of being taken seriously? Would you trust a doctor named Kaytelynne? Or a lawyer named M'Kaee? Or a senator named Orrin? (Seriously: "Orrin"?)

The two best places to find ridiculous names are Utah and the National Football League. I don't know why this is. Those two groups have little else in common.

In Utah, there are names like these, all of which I got from the single best silly-name source, the obituary pages: Vonda, Julaine, Luray, Ferral, Ardath, Shyrel, Artell, Gerial, Zelma, and Elna. (Utahns 90 years ago were apparently still a little punch-drunk from the trek west.)

From elsewhere in the paper, I find these actual names of non-elderly Utahns: Jefra, Eunhi, Chanthy, Shurron, Chaulyn and Lyndell.

In the NFL, there are these names, all of which belong to men who were born on Earth: Edgerton, Adalius, Peerless, JoJuan, Canute, Artrell, Ligarius, KaRon, Jashon, Earthwind and Plexico. (How does someone come to be named "Plexico"? Did his parents follow the Utah practice of name compromising, where Dad want to name him Plate, while Mom wanted to call him Mexico, and they combined the two?)

Do you notice that the names of the mostly white Utahns are very similar to those of the mostly African-American NFL players? Perhaps there is common ground between our cultures after all.

I present these rules in naming your children:

1. Don't make up a name. You have to give your child a name that already exists and is a commonly accepted name. That may sound restrictive, but there are literally thousands of perfectly good names to choose from. We don't need any new ones. Civilization is more than 6,000 years old; the brainstorming session is over. I'm sorry you didn't live 200 years ago, when exciting new names were still being forged. But now, in 2002, or whatever, WE'RE DONE. No new names.

2. Don't misspell your kid's name on purpose. Seriously, what are you trying to pull? Violation of Rule No. 2 is usually an effort to circumvent Rule No. 1: We can't make up new names, so we'll misspell an existing name, thus, in a way, making a new name!

No. You can't do this. It's not clever; it just looks like you can’t spell. It also does not distinguish your child from the other children with the same name. When the teacher calls on Michael, it will sound the same as if she is calling on Mikkal, MyKle or Mighkull. She should not have to differentiate between traditional-spelling Michael and all the train-wreck-spelling Michaels in the class.

3. You are entitled to one capital letter per name. Do not deplete our nation’s supply of capital letters by wedging two or more of them into one name.

4. No one takes women seriously whose first names end with two e's. I'm sorry, but it's true.

5. You have a friend who says he or she once encountered two people named Lemonjello and Oranjello. But your friend is lying. Those people exist only in urban legend. Stop saying you've heard of them, because you haven’t.

COMMENTS & REACTION: I really do look at the obituary pages every morning to see what funny-named people have died. The Vondas, in particular, seem to be dropping like flies. I predict that within five years, there will be no more living Vondas.

After this column appeared, I received three e-mails from people claiming to have known someone named S***head (pronounced "Sha-THAYD"). This is untrue, of course; S***head is another urban legend, and if I had been allowed to say S***head in the newspaper, I would have mentioned it in the column. Anyway, I wrote back to these people and let them know they were lying about knowing S***head, and none of them wrote back to insist they were telling the truth. So I'm glad we settled that.

I have personal knowledge of one such naming. I dare not offend.

Edit: Not S***head, just a bad choice.

I spelled my daughter's name differenty. But it's not horrendous, and it sounds the same. Alexys, and only because my dad was teasing me about naming my daughter after a car.
Before I actually had to take it seriously, I wanted to name my daughters Evliearia (El-ve-air-a), and Kerisitina (Ker-iss-it-ina). Not because they were made up names, but because I liked the way they sounded. Still may name them one day if I ever have more (so help me). I have a plain jane name. Carol for those who didn't know. It's boring, it's dull, and I don't really like it.

most folks down here don't use their "christian" names anyway

everyone is Junior or Bubba
chances are a guy named Matt or Carl is actually Raymond or Troy. (both real example respectively)
I know one guy who's immediate family uses 2 totally different names to refer to him and I never know who they're talking about at first.

I pay no mind to afrikan amerikan names
I call everyone ma'am or miss and mr or sir
(depending on if they are married or have kids)
If I really need to know I ask how to pronounc eit and they slur it anyway so i can't understand them and they look at me pissed like I should know how to pronounce Chraunchela.

most of the kids I went to school with were traditionally named which had its own problems:
there was one laSuandra & one Tamika (both black girls....rather large black girls) however Janda was a white girls
but the white or black we had reams of Brandy, Amy, Christina, Jason, and Billy

can you believe it? I was the only Michael for along time.
hmmm...there must have been another but I can't remember one.

Now a days white kids are all named after Things & Places:
Dallas, Austin, Hunter, Seirre, Marley, Karma, Crimson

unisex names usually

of course I live in Texas and in the land of great college football you need guys like Major Applewhite to lead your football teams to victory.

We even had aman named Jim Crow run for judge a few years back.

Now a days I don't even pretend to know or care what someone's name is. They make this shit up after watching too much tv.

oh yeah...I almost forgot about all the fucking jennifers...which I never fucked...cept that one...but I never called her jennifer cause everyone I knew called her tweety....names are fucked up

Venus
06-04-2003, 04:12 PM
I don't remember what the deal was Kol. I just remember I was set on naming them like that.
Now, in all honesty, what difference does it make weither a kid has a normal name, or a strange name? They'll get pegged with nicknames, both good and bad anyway. Hell, half my friends are called by their last names anyway. We have a Jim Catman = Cat, Matthew Twigg = Twiggy (that would be my Matt), and for the longest time I didn't know either's real name. There was Brandon AKA Arik = Taz, and I didn't know his real name for about 6 months. Veronica has so many nick names I can't keep the all straight. Roni, Vern, Kinsie. Cynthia's usually get shortened to Cindy, and even Carol got shortened to Care. Now the strangest one...one of my nick names was Yoda. Try to do the math to get Yoda from Carol, I dare ya.

Venus, I refer back to the first post in this thread.

Most likely, the addition of an "e" didn't have much meaning 35 years ago.

The Ferret (her little brother) is Chance. My favorite movie is Being There, hence that name.

Yeah I know alot of Jennifer's too Mac.. ALOT.
I had a friend growing up who's name was Lari. (lar-ie) and every year atleast one teacher called out Larry when they took roll the first day of school. She absolutely hated that. but i like that name..

I think people do this to be more creative and to not have their daughter "jennifer" be one of 50 jennifers in her granduating class type of thing./ My son's name is Devin, I didn't pick it for any particular reason other than the fact i only had girl names picked out, but when he came out with a penis attached, Teya just wouldn't have worked good. Teya was a little bit of a different name, but I really liked it at the time. I had a friend almost name her daughter Kaloni (Kay-Lon-ie) I think it's interesting to name your child something that not everyone else in the world has for a name.
Devin has increasingly become popular name, but it wasn't when I picked it for my son. Valerie (my name) is normal, but not at all common anymore.. and my brothers have two of the most common names Jason (JulyAugustSeptemberOctoberNovember) For the longest time i thought that was where that name came from.. lol........ and Jeremy.....
have a nephew named Corbin Dakota , but i always said his momma smoked some crack.

Then we have my dear Muddy :) gotta love him, but we call him Tripp. He is a third in his family.. if the time comes for a mini-mud, we will not have a Quad. :) I love his name, although i really like his first name as well, but it's funny to see the look on peoples face when they try and figure out what it is that i just said upon introduction. Tripp fits better than Trey anyday.. and no i'm not poking fun, but it is an unusual name...

if i have another child, we'll just place a vote.. lol. let you guys decide the kids name.. (naturallywith us being able to veto it if we hate it).

I played football against a guy named Nitrous Jackson. And yes, he was fast too.

Weird names from my highschool days:

Falando
Keisha

Other names from various places:

Joleeta
Maribone(pronounced mari-bon-hay)
Rastus- yes I have actually met a Rastus
Shaqueeta
Shanandria
Noribawm
Marius- named after the vampire I guess
Wolf
Outlaw- and yes, that is his name. He is the 7th of 7. And the only boy. Kewl guy too. Hangs out at Time Out.
Cretin- I really doubt his parents knew the definition of this when they named him.
Ilutious

Bah, all I can think of at the moment.

If I ever have a son, he WILL be named Connor just cuz I think its a kick ass name for a male.

If I ever have a daughter, I'll prolly have to bitch slap her mother to keep her from being named something god awful trendy. Tammy is a good normal name that isn't getting too much road time lately.

And Muddy.. there will be no bitch slapping me, thank you very much. We already agree on the name Connor... but Tammy.. you can forgetaboutit! I hate that name.. *makes my skin crawl* :P

I like the name Rachel Michele. Rachel isn't too common of a name now days either. I like the name Mia, but my friend just named her baby that, and you used to date some chick by that name. I like alot of names... but Tammy is definetly not one of them, atleast not for my daughter. I like the name Bethany. I like the name Sarahlyn (was Michele's first name).

i knew a girl in highschool who named her son Wynter. i wondered what would happen when she and her husband grew out of their hippie thing and had a kid named wynter running around, but i ran into her at sears over christmas and apparently they never did....
i have another friend who very typically named his little girl savannah. i refuse to call her that. to me she's vannah, she calls herself nana because shes two and cant pronounce v's too well yet. so all attempts at midwestern conformity have been circumvented, she is vannah from now on.

Well I pick the name Michele for obvious reasons of those that know me well, including you should know. My best friend of Many years was killed and her name was Sarahlyn Michele (with one l) and I want to name my daughter after her... so the one L sticks. but that's the reason behind it.

didn't this thread start off about how ppl abuse standard spellings of traditional names?
cause right now it looks like the "i'm gonna make up ne wways to spell names i think sound pretty" thread

as long as we're talking traditional names anyone know WHY different cultures adopted different names and spellings?

some cultures are easy. their names MEAN things. emotional or otherwise

some cultures the names are descriptive of the lineage

some cultures have all but given up on names that where not acceptable in the catholic doctrine after the protestant reformation in western europe.

now we don't care what they used to mean unless its in some cheesy baby name book.

I see only two reasons to pick a name, to pass on an association of a prior person of importance to you or to accurately describe a person.
Both of thos relate back to YOU tho. Its how YOU think of them and how YOU treat them
everyone takes their name and makes themselves into whatever they become

what name do you use for yourself anyway?
or have you ever even thought about it?

and what kind of culture do we have today to base new names on?

Hey, names and how they are spelt are individual idiosyncracies, subject to personal whim in this culture. I mean, hell, I got a cousin (Asmo may know of him) born to dirt-poor Arkies in the 40's. His mother liked the name Jose` - just liked the way it sounded. She was virtually illiterate.

His name? Hozay Mikel Bryan.

So curiousity has me wondering how you came up with Lilly's name. I think it's a cute name.. but bring to light to me how that came to play. What's the meaning behind it?

I choose the name Michele, spelled with one L , because it is in association with my friend that is no longer living./ and the names I picked that have Dian with them, are because of my mother. Most names i would pick have some kind of association to me, just some not as important as the others.

As for carrying on family names, like with Muddy.. he is a third, the child would carry his name on, but why make a 4th or a 5th or so forth and so forth.. After so long, what's the point.

There are some really fukd up names out there, my child won't have one of them. I don't think I spelled anything particularly strange. or just whatever "looked pretty". What makes traditional spellings so important anyways? people and generations change, did you expect the spelling to not do the same thing?

You know, there is something to be said for family traditions and the continuity of family names.

I knew a couple in Longview, Texas many years ago, and attended the christening of their first born son. I cannot for the life of me recall the middle name, but the outstanding part of the process was the family story that was retold as part of that christening.

His name was Melchior _____ XXVII. That's right, the 27th in that lineage to receive the name. The man who originated the line was the son of a crusader whose life was saved by a Saracen (the enemy); in gratitude he swore that his first born son would be named for the man who saved him, and the family had kept the tradition alive for nearly 900 years.

Edward Earl Brown IV don't sound so bad too me.

Some of my freind's folks thought it would be a good idea to give them a honest family name as a first name, squeeze the name they really like in the middle, and just call them by their middle name.

Which leads to confusion later in life when people try to find you in the company email directory, but we all have our crosses to bear.

i have a grandmother named eva. it would stand to reason that i named my daughter after her.
but i didnt.
i named her eva after the most beautiful girl i have ever met in my life. she was vietnamese, and the daughter of my boss. she had so much class, grace, beauty, intellect and kindness that i only met her two or three times but her face has stuck with me for years. also, eva was not her real name. i couldnt even begin to remember her vietnamese name and i couldnt spell it even if i did. this was her american name, and i imagine it was some kind of translated derivative or maybe she just got to pick it out when she started school. anyway, thats the story.
in my family, by the way, cicero is a family name.

So, if a man finds another man sexually attractive, but he has never nor ever plans to smoke pole, is he still bi/gay?

And why does it turn guys on so much to watch two girls going at it? Obviously, the guy's not getting it from them. It doesn't turn girls on to watch guys ramming each other.

Neither MAC nor Muffy can properly spell vacuum.

Hang on. I think I can do this...

Don't name your daughter Melissa Etheridge (http://www.eonline.com/News/Items/0,1,11625,00.html) Lastnamehere. ER bills from getting her shit kicked on the playground in grade school, therapy, chicks showing up with flowers... "I'm here to pick up your daughter."

No way.

Name your son that. It'll build character. I recommend beginning martial arts training during the second trimester.

Wilbur and Orville are also a couple of celeb names to avoid. Unless... come to think of it, no wonder! Overcompensation! Just make sure to use both names or your kid will be associated with pigs or popcorn and end up constructing a doomsday device.

Well, it's Barbara.

But there was a girl next door to us all of my life (dammit) that had the same name, and she was 2 years older.
She got to use Barb and I got stuck with Barbie.

Which is fine...my bio mom was a hippy

My full name is Barbara Dolly Darlene.

I'm not kidding you.

No no! Barbie is a good name to have. It narrows down several choices life throws our way. Primarily, moving to Malibu is out as is any guy named Ken, no matter his charm.

A rich "Ken" who lives in Malibu... You have your own TV show! I'd have to bitch you out for keeping my kids glued to the tube, tho.

:) Acutally - having such an interchanable name has helped me. It allows me to change my identity.

When I was young (up to age 10) I was known as Barbie.
from 10 to 26 I was just Barb.
The only time that I heard Barbara was when my gramma was mad at me (so I heard it alot)
Than when I split from my ex husband, I went back to using Barbie.
I was like changing my identity.

I don't know a Ken - but I know GI Joe

Hell, it could be worse. There was a family in Portland, Oregon, when I was a kid with the last name of Navy.

The boys were, in order of birth; Ulysses Samuel Navy, Uriah Seth Navy, and Urghardt Sean Navy. Cruelty to the extreme.

Ulysses enlisted in the Navy fresh out of high school - he got endless shit for his name. Imagine:

"Sailor, what is your name!"

"Navy, Sir, U.S., Sir!"

and you are off to a really bad start. Uriah paid heed, and enlisted in the Army after high school. He got it even worse.

Urghardt avoided the whole issue - he emigrated to Canada straight out of high school.

I'm known a couple Tylers in my life. Some boys, some girls.
There's a waitress at one of the bars I frequent, her name is Barb, but everyone calls her Barbzillia. I knew a Lianna, and her sister's name was Tatiana. I also knew a Lana. And now there's a Myriha. She's dating a we all know as Jake, but his real name is something like Johnathon Jeremeha or something of the sort. No clue why he calls himself Jake.

How about "Roland" - who goes by "Andy" ?

Roland, with the nick-name "Randy" - 'till they moved to kiwi-land, where "randy" is (old) slang for horny - so they changed it to Andy..

He stayed that way for the rest of the time..

especially when asked about what we do in the states, but the location on their info says NY, NY.

I know of a girl from India named Usnavy. Her mom saw it on the side of an American ship, and assumed that America, like every other country, names ships after women. So she thought Usnavy was a girl's name in America. Usnavy being U. S. Navy of course.

When I was pregnant with my daughter, I had very strict criteria for naming. The first rule was that the name could not be too popular (ie Jennifer). The second rule was that it had to be spelled the way it was pronounced (no Mykle for Michael). Third, it could not have a cutesy "ie" or "y" ending on it (Ashley, Brittany, etc) because her last name would be "Lurvey". And last but not least, it had to be a name that was multigenerational. Something that would sound normal for an adult but not too old of a name for a child. The reason for all of these rules is that I grew up with the name Audra, which I like very much now but hated as a child. I am still, to this day mispronounced Audrey, Andrea, Barbara, Sondra and anything else that sounds similar to Audra on the phone. My two choices for my daughter's name were these: Jillian Morgan Lurvey or Isabell Grace Lurvey. Jillian won out, other people didn't like Isabell as much as I did. The
Morgan is after my grandfather, who we were lucky enough to have around until 3 years ago, and who loved his namesake very much.

Hmm,

'Robert'--Not strange not strange at all but a 'Robert' can go by:

Robert, Bobby, Rob, Bob, Robbie, etc.

From now on, any one I know that calls themselves any of the above will be known to me as 'Bobert'.

Oh yeah, my niece’s name is ‘Amity’, ‘Amity Storm’ in fact.

This wasn't my lineage. This is my ex-husbands.

His sister Miriah was named after 3 family memebers. All Ukranian.
Miriah Esleena Ida

I broke that lineage thing when I was pregnant with my daughter.
She was due to be the next Miriah Esleena Ida.

I put my foot down on that.

Kristine Leigh Katherine Cooper

Great Great Great Grandmothers name (Kristine)

I don't think a single person in my family calls Kristine, Kristine (expect for me)
Everyone calls her Mousie or Cooper.

I don't personally like all these fad-y names for children.
I like all the "old" names.

Emma, Jane, Sarah, Mary, Katherine

The other names you see now like Britney and Ashley - they just all sound so snobby. I'm sure people who are named these are NOT snobby - but they just sound that way.

My mother and father were ex hippies but they didn't go so far as to call us Moonchild or Starstruck or whatever.

Instead I was stuck with Barbara Dolly Darlene Black.
Then my gramma adopted me and took out the Doll.
Barbara Darlene Smith
But I was forever stuck with Barbie Blacksmith.

Fuck...childhood was rough.
