And another thing about the Holodeck is it was always malfunctioning. It's all fun and games until you're trapped in a Holodeck with Jack the Ripper and the safety's off. And if it's not the Holodeck, it's the transporter sending you to an alternate universe, or the engines screw up and send you back in time. The last time MY car broke down, it didn't send ME hurtling through the space-time continuum. Hell, it seemed like these guys were going back in time every other week. Heaven forbid someone did a Holodeck simulation of a transporter during a tachyon storm, the clocks would look like something out of a Dali painting.

Troi: I don't need to be an empath to tell you how she feels about Mr. Data.

Picard: And I don't need Giordi's visor to see that camel toe showing through your spandex outfit.

Those 2 got me laughing. Neat read.

2. The Holodeck.

I mean, it's cool and all. But do you really believe that people would use it to re-create Sherlock Holmes mysteries and old-west saloons? Come on, we all know what the holodeck would be used for. And we also know what the worst job on the Enterprise would be: Having to squeegie the holodeck clean.

Too true! What an awful job that would be.

Heh! Known Space fell out of fashion long ago but it kicks the Trek universe all over the cosmos...

I just dropped my pants during finals, didn't I...

I'm married, dammit!

I was never a startrek fan...Im just not a dork, sorry...but seriously, if you could recreate worlds in the holodeck, why would you even have a way to set it so that you could die?? Honestly, is there any reason to build a deivce that could kill you and then go inside of it? No. What the fuck?

Ok...youve got me...but still, the killing they do is a byproduct of their function...a holodeck would have to be programmed to do so...like, someone would have to even put the time into figuring out how to make holograms kill for them to be able to do it in the first place...feh...

Forgot to ask earlier:

What the hell is Firefly? I've never heard of it.

Yo, Asmo. Where did your quote come from?

I remember now. It was established in STTNG that the holodeck created a special kind of temporary matter, not just a holographic projection. ST physics placed limitations on where that matter could exist; only inside the holodeck.

So, you can feel the grass between your toes but a failsafe would kick in to keep a boulder from smashing your skull.

In order to feel your surroundings, matter has to be temporarily replicated. Bullets are matter.

Something like that.

I wonder what would happen with a mosquito bite once you left the room...

firefly was a sci fi show that was on fox at the beginning of the season this year.

the fire fly was a cargo ship captained by an outlaw take no shit han solo type captain

I found it to be a fascinating concept. Different planets had different levels of technological advancement from ultra sci fi to medieval.

fox yanked it after just a few episodes because it was not getting the ratings they wanted. They seem to prefer shit bag cheap to make reallity shows over good programming.

what bothers me about star trek is that this is supposed to be a global government covering all of earth, acting as a semi-independent state within a larger federation. why do all the characters have american- or european-sounding names? all the black people are either aliens or have a surname like 'laforge'. how gay is that? where's lieutenant mbuto, or for that matter, even ensign hassan? and the marines, for fuck's sake, where are they?

It was born in the 60's? Idealism makes for good fantasy.

Trek is "spotlight" stuff. Look harder and you'll notice that the writers and producers tried to intigrate current events into the episodes.

The movie with the whales, for instance. Greenpeace. Notice that the captain of the ship constructing a makeshift solar sail was Middle-Eastern.

Whoops! Two minutes to horrible website. Gotta run...

Marines? I dunno! Does Marina Sirtis count?
