This drama is set in a 1971 boot camp in Louisiana. In the movie we see the grueling training process that young recruits go through to prepare them for the horrid wars in the jungles of Vietnam. Amidst the thick of things, we have draftee Bozz, Played brilliantly by a virtual unknown, Colin Farrell. Pvt. Bozz is rebellious, philosophical and free spirited. He is constantly challenging his superiors authority in anyway possible. Bozz's buddy, Jim Paxton(Matthew Davis) is an enlisted man, who joined up for a more romantic reason. Faced with the almost sadistic cruelty of the drill instructors and the prospect of being shipped out to fight in a losing war ( most of the characters realize the war is unpopular and unwinnable) , Pvt. Bozzes attempts to get dismissed from duty. Realizing that this is no longer an option, he instead helps others to flee.
A bit different from your conventional anti-war films, Tigerland plays not on the horrors of battle, but through the cruel training one must go through. The movie tries to portray heroism in a different light. What's surprising is this movie is directed by Joel Schumacher, who is usually more content in making huge summer blockbuster movies. The movie was shot with a 16mm camera, creates a matte, grainy effect. The budget of this film was quite small and it seemed like an attempt by Schumacher to enter the small movie market. I give this movie 1 1/2 smelly toes up.
