by definition atheism/ the theory or belief that god does not exist.(oxford dict.) i do not worship any thing or things, anyone or groups of any thing or things. i do not buy into theories nor do i outrite believe in any god, gods, or goddesses. i am not selfcentered or conceeded, i take life as it is handed to me or sometimes shoved down my throat. i don't blame some mystical "force" for my misfortune nor do i praise some mystical "force" for my good fortune. i just live day to day, do what needs to be done, and have fun in the midst of all the bullshit. religions, others beliefs, theories, and science intrigues me, but my brain will only "swallow" so much of it. i still don't believe atheism is a religion and buy definition i am, but i guess a better title for me would be to say i am a REALIST.

I'm with ya, Billy. I don't believe in any kind of higher power. My logic is quite simple. I look at all the other things I believed in when I was little that I had no solid proof existed...Santa Claus, the Easter bunny, the tooth fairy...they all turned out to be myths. Why would God be any different?
I don't consider atheism a religion either because there is no central god or gods.

I think this one was aimed at me.
You wanna know what I think you are, Billy? Ok, I'll put it to you in three simple words:
You're Welcome Here http://www.thehypertribe.net/ubb/biggrin.gif
Sorry for testing your mettle. Good reply and response time considering the emotional content.
I'll give it a 7.3
Judges?
your not so far off from a lot of people here.
stop using the word Atheist thought.
its active.
Active disbelief.
thats where the "its a religion" statement came from.
what I haven't heard anyone say is that God is not a white guy with a beard on the ceiling of the cistene chapel (bad mac, u no spel gud)
the easter bunny, santa claus, etc are holidays for man by man. were we do our own good in honor of some higher ideal we want to live by. Its not so hard. and you can not lie to your kids about it.
I don't
And I ain't no atheist... http://www.thehypertribe.net/ubb/smile.gif

There are a lot of things I'm unable to comprehend, much less understand. I can look at numbers describing cosmic distances but I am completely unable to fit those numbers into a mental semblance of "comprehending" what I know to be true.
I once used CAD software to plot the solar sytem. I used average orbital distances from Sol and documented planetary diameter for the model. Then I plotted Alpha Centauri.
I couldn't (and still cannot) grasp the distance. Nevertheless, I can point it out to you on a clear night.
I've just recently learned about a theory that may satisfy some questions about the homogenous nature of the Universe. The Big Bang model clarifies many of the questions we have concerning creation but we still want to know what happened before the beginning of time and space.
A bold new theory suggests that our universe came about by the collision of two or more universes in higher dimensional "space".
The numbers seem to work. Comprehending the ramifications of this idea is far, far beyond the capabilities of even those who put the equations on "paper".
I cannot assume that a higher power does not exist simply because I do not have the ability to comprehend reality as a whole.
GOD?
Maybe.
I suppose I'll learn the truth when Rabble collects my brain.

Forgive me for replying to myself (as it were) but this topic stuck with me.
How does one prove to another that something is real?
Think about it.
If I told someone that I don't believe in Mt. Everest, their proof to me would come from written documents, pictures, videos, perhaps even an introduction to someone who has been there.
I can discount every one of these instances as forgeries, lies and conspiracy if need be.
Sometimes you just have to trust your fellow human for the knowledge that has been gained through history and build on it. As an individual, it's up to you to decide what to take as fact and what to discount as garbage.
I'm pretty sure Mt. Everest is real. I understand relativity to a point. If I ignore the overwhelming measures of distance and time, I can picture the universe. With just a little more effort, I can see beyond the beginning of space and time.
The downside is that the concepts I consider to be true are based on the faith that the information given me has been accurately represented.
I don't know what you are, Billyman. I'm not even sure what I am.
