View Full Version : Home Improvement
What is the worst home project you have ever had to do? Gutters are bad, I'll agree. Toliets are worse, water hates me. Or maybe it likes me and that's why it always spills on me. But really, Do you have a project that worked out sucessfully? Or one that bombed so bad you pretend it was the dog's fault? It's always the dog's fault.
"Thankyou for calling Home Depot."
Mae: "Plumbing please.... Hi, Mark? This is Mae. When installing that garbage disposal you sold me, how important is it that the power is turned off?"
Mark: "Do you want to get fried?"
Over three hours later the Apt. Mgr Had the thing installed.
Never let your roomate lock the room with the power panel. I don't care if it is her room. Never trust the Mgr. when he says, I read the directions.

Big tree fell on my parents house as a result of a hurricane.
My father and myself, by ourselves, fixed it. We added some perties since we were there. The whole project was a nightmare.

Helped my brother and his wife peel the remaining wreckage off the joists of 1930'3 era farmhouse he bought 6 miles east of Durant, OK - 2 months later a tornado sucked most of the roof off. We cleaned it up, sheathed the entire roof in 1 x 12' he got free, then put down new tarpaper and shingles.
A month later we renovated the interior of the kitchen and the family room area - kitchen was done in recycled barn boards, and we carpeted the family room in carpet samples - over 250 of them stapled and glued down in a mosaic - no two were the same color, and lengths were everything from indoor/outdoor matting to 2 inch shag. It was quite unique!

Worst home improvement job=remodeling the garage (I blame it on my dad).
plumbing = np
water, gas, drains, pressure, copper, galv, pvc, hell I bet I could make an aquaduct work.
electric = np
single phase, 3 phase, grounding, recepticles, switches, 3 way switches, dimmers, 220, 110, lights,
alarms, telphone, cable = np
motion detectors, jacks, cables
now...carpentry work......uh...well......I can DO it
its just ugly when I get done.

i once lived in what i thought was a charming old 3 story three-plex down next to lake austin. the view from my balcony made me want the place before i even saw the inside.
when the guy i was going to marry moved in i asked him to fix one of the steps that was wobbly. he was a carpenter so i figured this would be no problem. quick and easy, and make him feel useful since we were still in the phase of the relationship where that was useful and not a nuisance.
i came home from work to find half the steps removed and he had called a buddy from work to come over with supplies. he then explained to me it wasnt a wobbly step, it was the beams holding the staircase that were rotten and the whole thing would have fallen down in a matter of months.
i explained to him that we were renting, and he patched it up as best he could and we made plans to move.

Measure twice, cut once
Measure once, curse twice
measuring isn't the problem
love of wood and attention to detail is.
I am a metal worker and I do not care for wood and its inferior molecular structure.
Give me Stainless Steel counter tops and copper plumbing anyday.
Give me injection moulded polymer/aluminum framed gunstocks anyday.
Wood is for cigar boxes.

Home Improvement, eh?
I think Tim Allen would approve of the latest effort. Started out this morning to rough frame a door opening in the back wall of my garage for a man-door to backyard. Drafted SLH for the labor (my shoulders don't work so good anymore, and my gripping strength is about equivalent to a 5 year old kids), and started tearing the interior sheathing off of the beam to get a clear idea of what would be needed. Ended up kicking the exterior sheathing off an 8 foot wide opening between the end wall of the house and the storage shed room at the back outside corner of the garage space. Header beam is intact spanning the opening, none of the studs are load-bearing, as the garage was originally a carport that was closed in.
So, change of plan - we are gonna put a roll-up garage door in that opening, and make that bay of the garage drive through to the backyard. Meanwhile there is a gaping 8 x 7 hole in the back wall of the garage.
Ain't it fun?

You should see what it did for the neighbor's property values when he did it. :D
I helped to remodel an old Farmhouse and we fountd the final resting place of the other hamster. We discovered why it is bad to leave holes in the floor. Sure you can tell the people about it but the dog stands not a chance. She wasn't hurt but she had a great time exploring the underside of the house. She didn't say anything about it, did I mention that she talks? Except she now looks at the floor sometimes, You can tell it's like those people who have had the spider drop on them from the celing. I had the best time reading the news papers that wewr stuffed in the lathe and plaster walls for insulation.
