WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Secretary of State Colin Powell promised that a U.S. military occupation would hold Iraq's oilfields "in trust" for the Iraqi people.

In an interview with U.S. newspapers on Tuesday, released by the State Department on Wednesday, Powell said the Bush administration was studying different models for managing the Iraqi oil industry if the United States invades.*

"If we are the occupying power, it will be held for the benefit of the Iraqi people and it will be operated for the benefit of the Iraqi people,"* he said.

"How will we operate it? How best to do that? We are studying different models. But the one thing I can assure you of is that it will be held in trust for the Iraqi people, to benefit the Iraqi people. That is a legal obligation that the occupying power will have," he added.

Powell said the U.S. military would not want to run Iraq for long after a possible invasion but he declined to speculate how long U.S. troops would stay in the country.

"There is no desire for the United States armed forces to remain in charge or to run a country for any length of time beyond that which is necessary to make sure that there is an appropriate form of government to take over from the initial military occupation," he said. The U.S. government is going to hold the oil assetts of the Iraqi people in "trust" for their benefit?

Oh, really? Anyone here American Indian? Anyone here Nisei?

Better question - anyone here dumb enough to trust the U.S. government to manage another nations assetts properly? If you are, you need to talk to the Swiss.

Anyone here dumb enough to think Andrew Jackson is still president?? Anyone here dumb enough to think that with all the scrutiny that will assuredly be put upon the US occupation of Iraq, especially in regards to its oil assests, that the US would exploit the single matter that could vindicate it, as a well meaning and benevolent nation, for material gain?? I mean shit, its not like theyre going to just hand over concrete proof of the primarily fabricated 'Its all about oil' rhetoric...

Heres whatll happen...oil fields will be operated, most likely by American interests who must be fairly compensated for their efforts and American oil prices will drop a bit, but the Iraqis will be selling a shitload more than they are smuggling out now and the Iraqi people will be seeing the cash, not Saddam and his military...

All the U.S. wants is money. And what has oil been called? Black gold and is not gold a forum of currency?

Get gas prices back down under a buck per gallon and I'll go register as a Republican. :D

I don't think I'll be a Republican anytime soon.

OPEC supposedly opened up the flow a bit to keep the US economy from being dumb. A happy US is a happy OPEC.

Why have the prices continued to climb, though?

Stupid freaking companies.
