One alternative is to use shell accounts on freenet.nether.net. It takes a lot of explaining, but i'll do it here, once. For windows users anyway....
1)
Go to your start menu, select "<u>R</u>un..." and type "telnet" without the quotation marks.
2)
Once telnet is open, select <u>C</u>onnect -> "<u>R</u>emote System ..." -> type in: freenet.nether.net and hit <u>C</u>onnect
You will get this once you're connected up:

It will then ask for information on you.
It's best to put in false information as all the users on this system can see it even if you tell it to "keep it private".

I've picked "thehyper" as the login here for this demonstration.
(If your login name is already taken, just try a different one or add numbers at the end.)
After you've entered a valid userid, you will be asked to set a password. When you enter it in, you won't see it so make sure you type it correctly. I've set the pass to:

It's a lot to set up, but it's only the one time(or use the one I set up already). Once you do it's just as easy to upload to as geocities. (assuming you people use FTP)
