View Full Version : UFO = Unidentified Flying Object

Not many people seem to realize that anymore. If it flies and cannot be identified, it's a UFO.
When I'm asked, "do you believe in UFO's", the answer is always, "yes". Something seen moving in the sky that cannot (or has not) been specifically identified fits the description.
What brings me to these thoughts this morning?
Simple, as usual.
First, I read this:
http://www.cnn.com/2002/TECH/space/10/22/ufo.records/index.html
By nature, my curiosity and head for learning more about a given subject dictated my next step. What can I say? Google is better than sliced bread.
http://ufos.about.com/library/weekly/aa012901a.htm
There were several directions I could have gone from the first article but I thought it best to begin with PA.
Keep in mind while reading that the Cuban Missile Crisis was still a relatively new situation just as 9-11 is now.
The declassification of those documents should prove to be quite interesting.
If it was an extraterrestrial vehicle, we'll probably be told that it was indeed a Soviet spacecraft. If it was a Soviet probe, we'll probably be told that it was a meteorite.
What I wonder, though, is whether you think that Earth has had extraterrestrial visitors.

I'll let my vote speak for itself on this one.

I absolutely believe in E.T.'s. For us to believe that in this whole universe we are the most intelligent life forms around is simply arrogant. And you know that if we had the technology to travel to different worlds, we'd be doing it.
theMAC plops on the storyteller hat then yanks it back off again
IT WAS SUCKING MY BRAIN!!!!1
"what about those flashy things low on the horizon?"
"satellites"
"what about crop circles"
"hoaxes"
"what about easter island"
"a selfdefeating society on the brink of collapse"
"what about bacteria on fragments of meteorites?"
"uhhhh"
most of the things I have heard or seen in my life that pointed to aliens were pointed there on purpose
and the rules of the universe allow for so many phenomena to occur that its hard to trace them back to their source.
I hav enever seen anythign personally that told me that aliens had visited this planet while I was here but I have seen too much variation in life and too many repeating patterns of things beyond the human scope to say they where all accidents and coincidences
so here's my question
if we are the only life why are we looking at the stars?

I need more information before I can form a firm opinion.
WTF?
This isn't the first time ANY OF YOU have heard about UFO's.
...need more information..........heh
heLLO00ooo, what planet are you on? jeesh.
Make up your mind already.
I have so many ideas in my mind about this whole topic, and I NEED FACTS. There is not one fact in those articles except one thing, someone in lying.
My friend Evan, who is addicted to gambling, told me a story. Him, Jordan(an alcoholic) and Rob were walking in the woods by my home town. Evan told me they saw a bright red star shoot across the sky. Not like a meteor. To sum it up, it looked like it went over celestial. From the horizen straight across to the opposite. That didn't make much sense, and neither is this whole topic. Evan's right into the UFO's and extra-terrestial shit.
When he asks ya about the whole topic he asks, "Do you believe in UFO's?"
Well ya, sure, I believe in UFO's, but what about E.T.'s?
"Yea yea, that's what I meant."
My opinion on this is like my opinion on God.
Star Wars? Is it really true?!
[edit: does it really matter that he's addicted to gambling, or that the other guy is an alcoholic?]

You know, I'm damn near thirty years old and never, repeat, never have I seen a shooting star. I even sit outside with my telescope some times, still, nothing. But I'm sure they exist.

how very, very strange. when it gets dark tonight, assuming things are cloud-free, go lay on the lawn staring at the sky with all the house lights off. you should see about one a minute. unless you're one of those people with inferior eyesight, that might-could be the problem.

Been there done that. And with corrective lenses I see just fine. 20/20 in one eye 20/15 in the other. As a kid me and a few friends use to lie in the grass in the local cemetery hoping to see one.......nothing. As I said, I like to stand, sit, lie outside sometimes on clear nights longing to see what everyone talks about...........nothing. The last meteor shower that took place I was going to see one if it killed me...the damn sandman got me (the bastard). I've tried, I try, still I come up short. Maybe one day. :( And yes it is strange. Very odd even.

try it some place where the nearest source of petroleum fumes and artificial light is your turned off car, and the next nearest is 15+ miles away. failing that, your 'corrective lenses' may be causing glare, and thus blocking out your view of the meteors.
I was gonna say, stay outta the light.
I went out to a beach one, out on the ocean, and the clear night sky was m-a-g-n-i-f-i-c-a-n-t.

Thank you for the enthusiastic responses thus far.
Notice that I didn't ask whether or not you believe that life exists somewhere other than Earth.
I could have answered "Yes" to my own little poll here quite easily. My answer would not have been based on anything that I could claim to be factual. The more we study life on Earth the more it becomes apparent that this universe is a rich birthing ground of life.
Given the known limits of travel between one star and another, most of the events we read about in (like it or not) historical records can be explained as either Natural or Manmade.
For the record, I'm of the opinion that we are one group of living creatures in the vast cosmological sea.
Nevertheless, I'll need proof to agree with you that my assumptions are correct.

As for me, I'll quote Contact, "If we are the only life out there... seems an awful waste of space."
I myself have seen a few in my travels. Some turned out to be satellites, some aircraft of US origin, but some I have yet to find any relation to/for/of.
I was driving back from Tyler one night many a moon ago. I topped a hill and saw a blinking reddish/orange light straight ahead of me. I paid it no nevermind thinking it was a weather balloon or something. Then I saw that it wasn't flashing with any rythym at all.
I kept going till I got to the stop sign and the light was still straight in front of me and looked about 500 to 1000 yards out away from me in a field and about 200 yards off the ground.
I stopped and started to take a really good look at it. And it shot off over the horizon before I could even say what the fuck. That quick. And to my knowledge, no plane, jet or whatever that we have now or then can move that fast.
That is my best UFO sighting story. Hey, it may have been my real dad trying to say hello or something. ELVIS HAS RETURNED... "and went right past the alter, down the ramp, and out the dooooor..." I couldn't resist the Spaceballs quote.

Actually, read the works of D. Robert L. Forward, and over a dozen others. There ARE several different technological means to attain travel to the stars in reasonable lengths of time. The fact that we cannot currently implement those means does not change that fact.
I doubt that humanity are the smartest, or the most technologically advanced, creatures in the cosmos. We are a product of a population II, or possibly population III, star in a rather insignificant galaxy far from the probable epicenter of creation. The likelihood that we are the only intelligent, tool making species to ever arise is vanishingly small.

A lot of UFO's are dismissed as weather balloons. I have never seen a weather balloon.

I'm 8 miles out in the country. Mostly the only fumes around here is when I fart.
Glare? From contacts? I know what yer getting at and you assumed I meant glasses which I do wear more often. Here's another kicker about the glare thing.....I didn't wear glasses until I was 20 something.
In time I suppose, in time.

Headlines lead me to www.space.com which led me to google for this (http://www.disclosure2003.net/index2.html) which will lead you back to the space.com article which I won't repost since it's already redundant.
Scroll to the bottom of the "Disclosure 2003" page given. Lotsa links in one paragraph. The Echelon stuff, too. I haven't seen Enemy of the State yet. You tell me (in a relevant thread, if you please :) )

Since I got this (http://www.local6.com/orlpn/news/stories/news-174417920021028-161052.html) from the same source and it's more interesting, the UFO story might be shelved...
Sad, that.
Woot! We're still on topic! Pity that people don't vote though (see top of thread).
Branch off into a new thread with some of those. You have voter apathy, animal cruelty, government conspiracy and extraterrestrial civilizations from which to choose.
Keep the latter here. Go wild with the rest but I'm looking for opinions.
Yeah, I know. I provided the distractions but, dammit, it's Billyman's fault!
Vote.

Here's some evidence:

Go watch the video. It is difficult to see clearly, but it doesn't look like any aircraft I've ever seen.
