View Full Version : Tolerance and learning...are we fighting too much?

I just wanted to say this and start a discussion about our interactions here as I see them.

We debate many serious issues here. Argument for the sake of argument is counterproductive. Arguing with a point helps us all learn.

I bring this up because several of us got into a mud slinging contest today over the subject of suicide. I thoroughly enjoyed it. My worry here is that someone might take offense and leave. No I am not worried about 3MTA3 he has shown himself to be thick skinned and very able to take care of himself. I don't mean anyone arguing today. I just want to see what people think about our behavior. I don't want this place to turn into a flame war but sometimes we need to scream at each other to understand the depth of the other person's feelings. I thoroughly disagree with 3MTA3 on suicide but you have to admit he brought some good perspective into the discussion and allowed us to better explore the issue. If we all agreed on everything here it would be masturbation to discuss it. Only with conflicting ideas can we really find the truth.
So I salute all those whom disagree and to those whom think the battle harsh I say try to look at it as an opportunity to challenge your beliefs and to open your mind.
I would like to hear from all of you as to whether this type of hostile exchange is acceptable or if you think we should tone it down.
Thanks http://www.thehypertribe.net/ubb/biggrin.gif

A disgareement kept civil can yield benefits. Once it spirals into a flame contest, the original point can easily be lost to the want to "outflame" the other combatant(s).

If a point need be made, make it with a bit of tact. not only will it come across as a more adult perspective on the issue at hand, it is also an exercise of one's own ability to discus something without having to resort to calling the opposition a pack of fucktards.

Cant recall where I heard it, but something to the effect of the higher intellect not having to resort to base comments to try to prove a point applies here. Granted, emotion is a strong force to overcome, and one that I fall prey to time and time again. But when I have the testicular fortitude to look at a debate with logic rather than emotion, I can usually make my stance on said issue better received.

Yes it does...heres how...

(a) (n + 1)² = n² + 2n + 1

(b) (n + 1)² - (2n + 1) = n²

(c) Subtracting n(2n + 1) from both sides and factoring, we have

(d) (n + 1)² - (n + 1)(2n + 1) = n² - n(2n +1)

(e) Adding ¼(2n + 1)² to both sides of (d) yields

(n + 1)² - (n + 1)(2n + 1) + ¼(2n + 1)² = n² - n(2n + 1) + ¼(2n + 1)²

This may be written:

(f) [(n + 1) - ½(2n + 1)]² = [(n - ½(2n + 1)]²

Taking square roots of both sides,

(g) n + 1 - ½(2n + 1) = n - ½(2n + 1)

and, therefore,

(h) n = n + 1

so we can correctly(??) assume that n + n = 2n + 1

Anyways...

I think the suicide debate was fruitful as all shit...I just hope other people werent turned off by it as I know myself and RW can get a bit dramatic to say the least...personally, I think its one of the best topics we have goping right now as its touched on a shitload of issues and seems to be of interest to quite a few folks...good stuff...just dont mind the pissing contest...and me playing devils advocate at times...

Ha ha. Snrub double posted.

Anyway, on the topic. I enjoy arguing, especially about politics and stuff.

The pissing contests just seem to be part of the package.

I don't like being censored however.

I haven't read the topic yet but I appreciate the heads-up.

Yet you remain curiously silent on the subject... Is the great Koliedrus taking a moment?

Gosh I'm glad I didn't get in the middle of that suicide discussion.
I read it and debated but held my tounge.
You guys did a good job of covering it.

As for fighting too much......
Hmmmmmmm??????

Life is good, even when it sucks.

Had to throw that in in case anyone thought I might be pissed or something.
