Some of you may know this already but i've found that many don't.

There are ways to download a song a lot quicker then normal. When you are in the "search" screen. You will see the option for advanced searches. Use that and go to "bitrate" choose "at best" "96 kb/s" sometimes (rarely) you will come up with no matches. So try "112 kb/s" The lower the bitrate the quicker the song will download. So if you are downloading 320 kb/s songs it will take you a long time. I dont know if this effects people on a cable modem.

ALso ping will affect download time. the lower the ping the quicker the download.

sorry if you guys know this already :\ just tryin to help

I'm going to throw out some info here...

If anyone is downloading a song at a bitrate higher than 128kbps, YOU ARE WASTING YOUR TIME!!

CDs are recoreded at that rate, so it would be pointless to rip one at a higer rate. No sound quality gain, whatsoever.

128kbps is the number to live by.

I don't know about that.

I liked the black album. I haven't listened to it in years but I still own it. I haven't bought a single thing from them since. They are too "POP" now plus their lone ranger stand against Napster.

Kitten what are your thoughts on the morality and ethics of "sharing" MP3s online?

Although you didn't ask me, I will answer.

I don't have a problem with it. Why? Because record sales been up by many, many percent since the advent of these file sharing services. These have done nothing but a good thing for artists.

I personally never buy CDs. So, any song I download, the Record Company isn't losing a single cent from me downlaoding it. Because I wouldn't buy the CD in the first place. And that is the problem with the statistics these companies have brough out. But, I wont get into that.

Sharing/stealing is fine. It's such a non-problem.

i dont think its wrong to share music online. i think bands should be flattered that we like their music so much we want to share it with millions of people. I dont understand what the problem is really....

I agree with you both. I purposely pointed my question the other direction because I wanted an answer without steering it.

Without even looking at the statistics I can see where napster really does not take money away from the artists. Like PM said most of the downloads go to people whom would not buy the CD in the first place. Also some CDs are bought just to fill someone's MP3 collection and put on a dusty shelf from then on. The ticket sales to concerts surely must be better due to a bands added exposure. It also gives small bands the chance to get exposure which is so hard to get starting out.
People buy CDRs and disks, MP3 players CD ripping / editing software which stimulates the economy generating more wealth and more customers able to buy CDs and concert tickets.
Copying software does the same. Shareware would die off completely if giving something away didn't encourage people to buy it. If you want the cool CD cover and full audio resolution and don't want all the download time buy the CD.
Metallica's lawsuit was an act of vanity. The proof is they stood alone. They did not have an outpouring of support from the industry or the media. They were going to show Napster whom was boss. I am sure the lawsuit cost them several times more than any money they might have lost to Napster. Finally their reputation has been stained and they will fade into oblivion.

My take on napster legal issue with record companies ....

#1 how is downloading MP3's off napster (or internet in general) any different from the radio. Ppl listen to it for free and alot off ppl record off it.

#2 blank tapes? recording from a friend at their house vs recording from a friend off the internet ??

#3 movies .... recorded off tv and other movies all the time ....

most of these things are actually quite legal because they are not being sold they are for personal use only ...

now i download mp3's usually so i can have music on my comp with out sticking a cd in and to hear songs i before i go buy the entire cd .. if i had a cdr id prolly record them also ... but i am not planning to turn around and sell the cd's; im not making any profit ....

this is why i dont have a problem with napster ...

on the metallica note ... i really never have liked their music ... im more off a guns n roses / pearl jam person myself but after this whole order i dont plan on even listening to their music whinny little baby bitches they are ...

I agree with Fallen Angel (and probably everyone else), it's OK to copy, just not to make a profit out of it.

Metalica will go down in history as being the biggest wankers ever.

Die the leech that is the record company.

Yo. Napster is good. I have lots of songs from it. In fact, almost all of my songs are from it. Now if you are someone like myself, a tertiary student who makes all his money packing shelves at the local supermarket, you have lots of time but not lots of money to invest in CD's. Thats why it is so popular. Why pay $30 far a CD when three hourd (on Dial up) can get the same at like 20c. Fuck them all if they want to change that.
