I haven't been able to get this out of my mind for weeks now.

He walked in to her house. Dragged her in to her back yard. Sexually assaulted her. Then he took a hammer and repeatedly beat her in the face with it. He did this until he thought she was dead. Hundreds of times.

She did not die.

Her name is Charlotte and she is an 11 year old girl. She lay in Primary Children's Hospital where the Doctors and Nurses that are assisting her in living require grief counselling due to her condition. They are taking bones from her ribcage to repair the damage to her face. Can you imagine the impact of having EVERY bone in your face broken? She has undergone over 30 hours of surgery already. Her eyes are still swollen shut after two weeks and they have no idea whether or not this child will ever see another piece of light. The man from the Hospital comes on the television every day and talks about what a strong little girl she is to be clinging to life the way she is. They talk about the fund that is set up for her at the local bank to help with the millions of dollars in damage some man with a hammer did to this little girl.

I do not know this child but have not been able to stop thinking about her. All of my problems and short-comings seem so trivial in comparison to the plight of this little angel. I just hope that one day she will be able to be a little girl again.

SALT LAKE CITY -- Calling his actions "subhuman," a judge accepted a guilty plea Friday from a man who savagely beat an 11-year-old girl with a hammer and attempted to rape her.

Javier Sickler now faces 23 years to life in prison for the August attack.

The suspect had pleaded innocent before Judge Timothy R. Hanson Nov. 1, but prosecutors said that a plea deal was in the works, which would spare the girl"s having to testify in court.

Sickler, 28, apparently knew the girl"s father from high school days. They"d rekindled their acquaintance shortly before the Aug. 19 attack.

In his plea, Sickler admitted he took the girl from her bedroom late at night. Neighbors called police after they heard moaning outside. Police say they found Sickler in the 11-year-old"s back yard, beating the child in the face with a hammer. He had also attempted to sexually assault her.

The charges he pleaded guilty to were: attempted homicide, attempted rape and child kidnapping.

The victim needed extensive surgery to reconstruct her face. She"s now blind in her right eye and may lose her sight altogether.

Sickler reportedly told police that he suffers from blackouts and doesn"t remember attacking the girl, though he does remember knocking on the door of her home that night.

When the charges were filed, District Attorney David Yocom said this was one of the most violent attacks he has ever seen and was amazed that the victim survived.

Sickler faces another rape charge in a separate attack against a 32-year-old woman three weeks before he assaulted the girl. That woman came forward with her allegation after Sickler"s pictures were broadcast in the media. Police previously didn"t have a good description of the alleged rapist. Those charges are still pending.

There is a great deal of pain in my heart for all the children whose parents beat them. There is pain for the children whose parents are never around. There is pain for children who never know thier parents, and there is pain for children who are taken from their parents, returned or not. I will never understand what drives a person to hurt a child. I don't care if he suffers blackouts. He remembered knocking on her door. He had some intention there that night. He may not remember it, but she, this 11 year old girl, will never forget.

I am speechless with horror. I had this same reaction when I heard about the mentally impaired teenage girl who was raped and violated with objects at Glen Ridge High (NJ) by a group of jocks.
