I believe the "Rebirthing" was designed to elicit a deep emotional response. I don't think a near death experience (actual death in this case) was the intent.
While I think these people got carried away and should be punished, You have to reject all forms of this non-voluntary therapy to logically object to Rebirthing.
I think any of these highly emotionally charged forced therapies is a violation of the child's rights.
Where do you draw the line???
Obviously violently insane people need to be treated against their will. Whom can be trusted to decide whom will be forced into treatment? The family? In this case the Step Mother obviously agreed to a treatment that in my opinion violated the young girl's rights and caused her death. Would it have been wrong if the girl had lived, had a life altering experience and turned out to be a good person? YES it would! "The ends justify the means" BULLSHIT! The ends NEVER justify the violation of personal liberties. Adolph Hitler thought mass murder was a means to a perfect human race and that the ends justified the means.
How about "Scared Straight"? Another "ends justify the means" program. Can't parents discipline their children a little at a time? The smaller the better. First ask, then tell, then tell strongly, then non physical punishment, then spankings, then therapy with a psychiatrist....NO MORE! If the psychiatrist says they should be locked up ask the doc to try harder then tell the doc..........
What are your opinions on programs like these that produce positive results ala Scared Straight?
