.. when you least expect them.

I just got looking at my hands and wondered at the change I saw there. I am losing my calouses.

While it is true I don't do any kind of physical work here, you would think that callouses you have had for years would stick around for at least a little while. Apparently not.

Just an observation.

I especially miss the ones that used to be on the fingertips of my left hand.

Scars. I'da never thunk it but when they fade, it detracts from the stories about how they were received. Lucky for me that the oldest ones are still around.

Third grade. My desk was jammed with books but I tried to pound one more in there with the heal of my hand. I'd forgotten about the newly sharpened pencil holding my place. The graphite has long since been absorbed but the pigment is still there.

Then there was the earlier G.I. Joe / Mercury Space Capsule incident. Remember by childhood friend who killed himself? We staged a crash with the help of some lighter fluid and leftover firecrackers.

When flaming plastic lands of the back of your hand, it takes a few seconds for the pain to register.

OOo! And I have a smilie-shaped one on my happy-sack. I should scan that one.

Neener, mofo - I got the ones on my left fingertips. :D

Hot plastic isn't anything new - 300 degree polymer to the majority of my left hand happened a few years ago, no noticeable scarring from that.

Then there's the one on my arm...but I'll refrain from discussing that.

I have a big ol' scar too. Doubt it will ever go away.

I've got quite a few cool-looking scars that will be there for a long time... the best of the best, chronologically:

18mos, right hand, ring finger, "U"-shaped scar running from just below the first joint to just under the fingertip. Six stitches (that's a lot for a very little person :( ) Sliced it open on some sharp piece of metal on the stove that I had to grab. From the way the scar looks there must've been one hell of a flap of skin/flesh.

4y, left bottom lip, four stitches. Dad was away for a few weeks and he called, in my excitement to talk to him I tripped and whacked my face on the corner of our kitchen table.

7y, left knee, elbow and some ribs. Just learned to ride my bike, was going uberfast and hit a sandy patch of pavement. Not cool.

??, somehow got a two-inch-long scar running down the bone under my right thumb.

11y, right palm... went to high-five someone and she stabbed me in the hand with a pencil. It's kinda grayish from the graphite.

12y, upper right lip. My dog bit me. Three stitches, the day before my first school dance. Probably wouldn't have looked so bad, but they had to give me several doses of Novocaine for it to have any sort of effect so it was all purple and bruised.

??, outer right thigh. Quarter-inch long x eight-inch thick scar. Pretty funky-looking, but I'm at a loss as to how it happened.

13y, right calf. I was climbing around on a playground (hanging upside under stuff) and got attacked by a mob of vicious little people (five- and six-year-olds). They stepped on my fingers and beat me over the head with a waterbottle. I fell and scraped the whole back of my calf. BIG scab, big scar.

13y, upper left thigh. I was climbing and a large chunk of rock broke off and landed on me. I imagine the the quarter-inch deep puncture wound in the center will leave a bit of a scar.

I'd have to say that was my coolest-looking injury ever. You shoulda seen it when it turned all yellow and brown :)
