View Full Version : my precious new babies (and some other stuff)
Ok.
One of th efirst things that caught my eye in th eworl dof colorful reptiles is the anerythristic morph (that being the absence of all colors except black) so you end uyp with a very white, black, grey snake. It just apeals to me.
recently I located a guy with some beautiful cornsnakes with this morph (and very cheap) so I picked them up. they are unrelated babies. if I don't hibernate them this winter in 2 springs I should be able make more babies (though as with most animals the first batch usually isn't that great for production)
so here's acouple quick pics of my babies, they suck for detail but they give you and idea and they show you the way these animals live
my normal female first

Here's the male. He is aggressive and ready to go.
Actually, many small snakes will get aggressive to try to scare you off. They are heavily predated in the wild and the instinct in them to fight is very strong. Most species seem to calm as they mature and become less worried about being eaten.....sorta like us and taxes.....

This beautiful female is a morph called Motley. The black splotches on her back are so large they all touch leaving that white spot in the center of the back.
You can see she moved right into her hide box, which is just tupperware with a little moist moss in it. This gives them a place to curl up an dsleep or digest meals and not feel exposed. Its very important to their well being that they have a place to hide from us.
BTW: all these are babies less than 12" long and thinner than a pencil.

Here' snew pics of my andean. She's gettin big.....but I need a little boy :( She will take 2 more years to get ready to breed. She's getting long (pushing 20 inches) but not very thick yet.

Ok, I fed my variable milks and took a couple pics of their enclosures. Basically they live in tupperware and are happy as clams in the sandy sea floor. (How do I know they're happy? They just renegotiated their union contract and opted for a pay cut if the rats got bigger.)
The black female. She i saggressive and active all th etime. i can't wait to have a dozen babies just like her.

My precious. She is the most dainty and beautiful, friendly thing.
She seems to almost be playing frequently and is very inquisitive.
She is also the thinnest, so I am "working with her". I'll get her fattened up and ready to make me lots of beautiful babies next spring.

Ok, a look at my boa's cage while we're at it. Sh ehas amuch larger hdebox, but same principle. She loves her water bowl especially after eating and during the shed. The room is 82-85 degrees and 70-80% humidty anyway...but she loves the water.

Finally a couple shots of her head and neck where beautiful pastel colors are showing up well after the last shed... these pics don't do justice bfu she has a wonderful pinky peachy hue to what used to be white on the cheeks and neck. Not as good as some animals but I am happy, none the less.

Babies?????!!?????1111
I thought babies were cute and cuddly and soft and fuzzy and innocent. :p
Seriously, your snakes are beautiful. I'm certainly glad they don't live very close to me, though.

When I come to visit, I'm not staying in the house. I'm not sleeping in the yard, either. It's Motel 6 time at Mac's!
(BTW, when you breed the snakes, are you gonna sell the babies? Do you have to be some sorta licensed dealer? )
I will certainly sell some of the babys (they are worth $30-$50 each an dthey can have a dozen or so per female by their second year of breeding)
I hope to be able to pay for my hobby this way
[true intentions] reptiles are also prone to these morphs. they carry lot sof variable recessiv egenes and can pop off with some of the oddest things...and some of those morphs are very valuable...but you can change the animals over generations by choosing who you let breed and what babies you keep for future breeding. One day there could be a snake with my name on it.[/true intentions]
To my knowledge you don't need any kind of liscence in TX to sell reptiles. But some states have FUCKED UP laws.
For instance when i move to NV I will not be able to keep my pit vipers (copperhead and cottonmouth) and Kol's kids can't have any animals indigenous to the US.
I am also considering using this as a part of a business and seeing what I can do with my taxes. (I have had to give up my sideline work due to 1099s and not having dependants)

BTW:
last night I went outside to pee (like a MAN) and I noticed a snake (other than the one I was draining) a beautiful texas brown snake. I'll get pics tonight....gotta find it some earthworrms or sumthin to eat too.

so tell me mac- if someone were interested in the future possibility of owning a snake, what kind/breed would you recommend, and what advice would you give?

My advice (keep in mind I am still a big ole novice)
If you decide to get a snake for a pet
#1
How much room and time are you willing to dedicate to this animal. Consider that many of them can live 3 times longer than a dog.
#2
Consider that thou you don't have to jack with them daily like a dog or cat you MUST give them a suitable habitat and you MUST be able to maintain it.
Also there are LAWS about this sorta stuff. :(
Gotta check the local laws...
#3 (this one is important)
SOME ppl HATE snakes......do you intend to date?
Just ask me to pick between a woman and my snakes.
Its been 8 months since I found myself single and I haven't eaten a meal at the same table with a woman who didn't like my snakes. (I know how that sounds....shut up)
#4
what color do you want
seriously...the internet is FILLED with knowledge about all types of snakes....unfortunately it is written by ppl who already know what they like so they skip most of the basic questions like
"what's this difference between a boa and a python?"
You sorta have to read several different places to get an idea of what's what. but once you research abit and get a feel for what you are comfortable with start looking at breeds....anything you like will come in 10 colors like a new car.
You can get an animal that will get 20 feet long or you can get one that won't ever be more that 3 feet.
They can come from the forest, the prarie or the desert.
But whatever you get you MUST feed it meat (rats/mice)
Luckily that easy, you can order them frozen and thaw them out when you need to feed one. (There's lots of stuff on this on the internet as well)
#5
Who else does this?
herpers (ppl who raise snakes and lizards and frogs etc) are all around you...you just don't know it....seek them out and listen what they have already had to learn the hard way. Go see what they have; the animals and the enclosures. I am gonna warn you right now...you may not liek most herpers. Don't know why but it does seem that there's a high density of ASSHOLES in this hobby.
*theMAC shrugs*
-------------------------------------------------------------------
My final inner debate is as follows.
What is appealing about this animal to me?
vrs
What food/habitat/etc do I need to raise this animal to a healthy mature adult and maintain it there?
---------------------------------------------------------------------
A balance must be struck in the above debate before you commit to an animal of anytype. But I consider it especially important with snakes because ppl get busy and ignore the thing in the
cage. You really must get some enjoyment from being near them. They can't purr and rub your leg or play with you at the lake.
That very thing is why I have my vipers. I actually feel better being near them. Tonight I cleaned cages and fed. My andean milk has grown tremendously lately. I can't tell you how proud I am of that.
I have been very slow to commit to things in my life and when I do they seem to fail. But I have never done anything to make me feel the way I do right now with my snakes.
If you honestly are considering getting a snake, start with the fact that its NOT just a fish in a bowl but its also not a allergy causing method to sell pooper scoopers and litter boxes.
Then look into the details of what you can honestly deal with as far as pets go.
There's pretty much something for everyone.
