What profession do you think people get into for the experience/enlightenment/whatever and not only for the money????

My number one choice... Astronaut!!!

Experimental physics comes to mind. Astronomers also pay more out of pocket than they're paid.

That's a tough one.

I would have to say teaching. It never makes you rich and it takes a certain person to be good at it.

I guess, but I think a lot of people go into teaching because they end up with a useless arts degree, and its the only other thing to do.....

My sister in law to be, got into teacher's college and she is the dumbest person I know (she once asked me if cuba was beside france), and she hates children.

You've just described my highschool-senior-year American History teacher. Well, aside from the in-law to be part.

wildlife biologist...

I should add that MOST teachers I have met went into teaching because they THOUGHT they were smart but they HATED math....

fuckin morons....

my sis has some great stories about english-teachers-to-be....

anyway, I vote for every teacher having to earn a living (or at least work) in their field for at least 10 years before they get to teach it.

There's lots. And,

Some people go into a job because of the 'experience/enlightenment/whatever' but still get paid a lot of money as well.

Did somebody mention teachers?

It's not the enlightenment/money and all that- back in the States, it's that big break in the summer. :D

Art and philosophy. Art is not worth anything until the artist dies, and philosophers contemplate the universe while serving up french fries.

im so glad somebody mentioned teachers!
*snickers*
im currently finishing my english degree to teach upper level highschool. i didnt do it because i have a useless art degree, but i do recognize that im the exception, not the rule. im doing it because i love literature. as i told theMac one evening, if i dont go into teaching then i spent all that time highlighting and writing notes in all my books for nothing. i know another girl who is getting her degree in english this fall, and she told me she may do the "teaching stuff because i dont know what else to do with it and im only 20", poor kid.
im never going to get rich and most of the kids i teach are not going to be inspired or get any damn meaning from it at all, and i realize that. but i cant think of any better way to spend the day than hanging with ishmael and the boys, sword fighting with the count, or chasing precocious fairies. oh that puck!
one more note: we should shoot all the elementary education majors and start over, refusing to let in anyone who was ever a head cheerleader, band princess, or homecoming queen. there are good reasons.

It hit me sideways when you said

im never going to get rich and most of the kids i teach are not going to be inspired or get any damn meaning from it at all, and i realize that.

Granted, the people who taught me may not have added much to their bank accounts for taking precious time from their lives to educate me. Many of them may not consider that richness isn't spelled with $$.

I recall their names from year to year. I recall their faces. In many instances, I recall their lessons.

My teachers taught me in several ways. They were all assigned to feed as much knowlege into my growing brain as was deemed fit for my age-group.

Beneath the requirements, I've always felt an attachment based on the personality of the instructor.

Respect was a biggy. Some used it far too much and instilled fear. I can't learn from the Bogey Man/Woman.

Then there were the student aids that found out that (college) I would be driving for a liquor run (dry county) and asked for a bottle of wine. I passed the course with an A but I think the fact that they realized that I was a person (not cattle) had a lot to do with it. I drew their attention.

Teachers. Yeah. They'll never be paid enough for being human and the shit they have to put up with year after year.

I hope I made one of them proud.
