Ah, those wonderful redXs; we love them so.
I was curious as to why Geocities decided to stop linking images. For that matter, I still am but a Google search for "image hosting" gives pause to one of several possible reasons.
Most image hosting services seem to cater to the online auction phenomenon. During my brief visits to these sites I noticed a common ingredient; $MONEY$
Several different options for image hosting have been presented in various threads (Bishop = genius). The common-sense method is to use the webspace given you by your ISP but many feel that a compromise of security by inadvertantly pointing people to your ISP-hosted files. I tend to agree.
Others are simply riding piggyback on someone else's account, be it a parent, spouse, partner, flatmate, what have you.
With these thoughts in mind, I tested out ONE free service that encourages linking from message boards.
http://www.postmypic.com
I read the limitations (pics are hosted for 60 days), the legal (no porn etc), and attempted to upload my fancy-schmancy Poteen-powered rotating sig.
Error. Their system determined that my file was larger than the standard user's screen and gave suggestions on how to rectify my problem. Strike 1.
Next, I chose a pic that already fit within the boundaries of those suggestions and was provided with the following URL as a link to my pic:
http://a.postmypic.com/a.nsf/Z/std2SIEK/$file/std2.jpg
Now comes the real test; will that URL say a thousand words or fizzle into another frustrating failure. Let's go see, shall we http://www.thehypertribe.net/ubb/biggrin.gif
<IMG SRC="http://a.postmypic.com/a.nsf/Z/std2SIEK/$file/std2.jpg" border=0>
As a sidenote, I picked that image because of the smile factor. If this experiment is a success, my face may split. I should also point out that the name of the file was accidental. The Stevo series began with "st", first pic "a", second revision "2", etc. "std2.jpg" was an accident of efficiency, not an attempt to imply the nature of the subjects or the era.
Whoops! My grin just reached the back of my head...
