If you enjoyed movies like Saving Private Ryan, The Thin Red Line, you'll like this one too.
Wow....a WWII movie with no Americans around. This movie is based on a true story of 2 snipers , a German and a Russian, dueling it out amidst the battle of Stalingrad in WWII. The Battle of Staligrad was a horrific battle in which millions of German, Russian soldiers and civilians died. Many Belive this battle turned the tide of the War.
Someone did a very nice casting job. Jude Law plays Vassili Zaitsev, a simple shepherd from the Urals with a extraordinary talent with a rifle. Ed Harris is Major Koning, the steely eyed German Sharpshooter sent to eliminate. Joseph Fiennes is Commissar Danilov, a political officer who uses a Zaitsev as a propaganda poster boy. Tania is played by Rachel Weisz. (Rawr http://www.thehypertribe.net/ubb/biggrin.gif ) She is basiclly the love interest and is involed with a love triangle between Fiennes and Law *yawn* how very Hollywood. In reality she was a very accomplised marksmen herself. Bob Hoskins is the quick tempered ,foul mouthed Nikita Khrushchev.
The battles in the film are epic in proportion and very Saving Private Ryan-esque. The ruins and rubble that was Stalingrad was portrayed very convincingly in this film. I enjoyed the way how the German Sniper was portrayed as cold methodical and the Russian sniper was a lacking in confidence and often very emotional. The duels were full of suspense and action. Im sure the guys would love this. What I didnt like was the love triangle between Fiennes, Law and Wiesz. I felt that this didnt really do anything for the film. I rather slowed it down and took away the momentum. Perhaps the writers put this one in to balance out the testosterone.
Vell, I give this movie 2 toes up. Didnt really want to get into a hardcore analysis of the movie, as my writing skills are a bit lacking.
Why are you still sitting in front that screen? Well...GO WATCH IT!.

but thin red line can't compete with Saving Private Ryan. The Thin Red Line lost my interest quick.

I liked Thin Red Line. I wouldn't compare it with Saving Private Ryan because I think they are two very different films. The Thin Red Line is more of an emotional and philosophical look at war. Its more about nature and the nature of man, and how things kill each other to survive.

I didn't like the Thin Red Line. I didn't like how many "in-head" conversations people kept having with themselves. I look forward to seeing Gate.

I hated that movie. Didnt like the 60's version or the 90's remake.
I understand the need to look at things from a different angle, but that movie was kind of like listening to a PETA rep give his opinion of a steak dinner. No real perspective, no foundation.

Maybe I missed the point. Oh well.
