People don't seem to moderationize very well...
Once in microbiology the teacher told us a story of a man who kept getting arreted for drunken driving.
it turns out he had a bacterial infection that resulted in anerobic respiration (or fermentation) and raised his alcohol blood level to above the legal limit.
True story...

Doesn't mean you should deny everyone something because of those who can't handle it. If that were the case, we'd have few liberties.

Hmmmm...seems as though there are many laws with that logic as their roots already...why not keep going?

Just because something's prevalent doesn't mean it's right.
That applies for my argument and yours.

People need protection from themselves. And if a few can't handle something responsibly no one should have it. Always let one bad apple spoil the whole damn bunch.

When I did criminal justice I got to hang out down at the police station and watch them breathalize people - it was quite freaky. You would get people who had been caught driving who were absolutely shitfaced, and they would blow under the limit - and then you would get people who appeared stone cold sober who would blow 3 times their limit. It left me with little faith in the justice of the whole process.

While I was doing some community service for one of my many crimes of spirited driving (I dont drink and drive, I just haul ass), the police were going through the group of people there for service, doing breathalizer tests. On TWO seperate occasions, I saw guys get the test, and get dragged off the premises by the police. You have to be thick as a brick to show up drunk to work for a bunch of cops and corrections officers.

Bad thing about it; I used to work with a guy with 13 DUI charges, all convictions.
He said for most of his court dates he would hit the bar before hand and be plastered in front of the judge. And they still just gave him a few days in jail, maybe a month of community service and he would get his liscence back.
And no, I do not like the system we have.
I like to drink and I used to like to have a few drinks and take a drive. I find it relaxing. But, it is just not worth the risk doing it now though I do not get drunk enough to fall asleep at the wheel etc...
Devil's advocate guy sorta got it right... a few bad apples and it screws the rest of us over.

Worst (true) story I ever heard was of one guy who had 37 drunk driving charges pending conviction over a period of six months - he was a taxi driver, and most of his charges were from while he was working.
You would think taxi companies would fire anyone as soon as they were caught drunk wouldn't you - Ah well, its a fucked up world. Maybe they thought they should wait until he was actully convicted - but 37!!! Good thing is he lost his liscence for 4 years.
