An Italian, a Jew, and a Chinese guy all begin working for a construction company on the same day. The boss says:
"Ok, Mario, you go paint that wall over ther. Goldman, you go nail those boards over there. Yan, you're going to be in charge of the supplies. Everybody got it?"
All the men nod, and Yan walks off towards the supply shed. An hour later the boss comes back to find Mario and Goldman sitting where he had left them.
"What are you guys doing?! You're supposed to be working!!"
"It's the Chinese guy, he's never come back with the supplies. He walked over there, and we haven't seen him since."
So the boss begins walking to where the guy had pointed to look for Yan. As he turns a corner, Yan jumps out of nowhere and yells...
"Supplies!!"

An Asian man walked into the currency exchange in New York with 2000 Japanese yen and walked out with $72. The following week, he walked in with 2000 yen, and was handed $66. He asked the teller why he got less money than the previous week.
The teller said, "Fluctuations."
The Asian man stormed out, and just before slamming the door, turned around and shouted, "Fluc you Amelicans, too!"

We're ok. Took some damage but nothing that'll kill us or our spirits.
Ease up on Goatboy. That shit actually made me smile.
Years back, we organized a family reunion to be held near here. Some of our Northern cousins expressed concern about having to go around barefoot and evacuating in outhouses. I suppose it's true that ignorance, fear and prejudice walk hand in hand. ;)
The foundation of our house is undamaged. The contents of the lower level are another matter. What does matter is that my family is safe and we'll get through this.
I'm taking a break from the cleanup.

Thanks, guys. We're all unharmed. Unfortunately, I don't live in a
flood plain (that didn't come out right), we live near the top of a
good-sized hill. Almost a mountain but not by Tennessee standards. As
a result, no flood insurance.
The "hill" continues up from my back yard for about 50 meters. I'm
guessing that the difference in elevation between the house and the
top of the hill is about 20 meters. Rainfall of roughly 23 cm (9
inches) fell in this area over two days. My back yard is flat so it
did sort of act as a mini flood plain. It had no place to go so it
invited itself into the lower level. Ankle deep. While it was
raining, I heard spillage outside the downstairs door. When I opened
it, water was coming over the retaining wall and spurting through
cracks in the mortar. The top of the retaining wall is a little over
2 meters above the downstairs ground level. A few years ago under
similar conditions, I watch my neighbor's retaining wall fail and
demolish two cars. I didn't want that to happen to us so I moved ours
a safe distance away.
Then, all I could do was wait, move what I could, elevate and secure
any electrical connections and make plans for the immediate future.
I'm still doing that. We're going to lose a lot once it's all sifted
through but most of that will probably turn out to be shit we needed
to get rid of a long time ago. I may have to harden my heart and
swallow my tears if I come across a video or photo album that took
damage. The one's in locations I could recall under the circumstances
are safe. So are the people in them. That's a good thing and what
matters most.
Whelp, that's my update. I have a job ahead of me but it isn't
something that I can't do. It's too soon for us to say we're in or
out of the Jump but we'll do everything we can to be there.
Be well, guys and keep working on it. I'm in even if it turns out
that I can't be "there".
Michael
glad to hear you are ok. I just got back and would hate for you to be gone from here for any lenght of time! :) ok, so that's selfish, I know. If I didn't live a couple of states away, I would be more than willing to come help w/ the clean up and repair, but since I can't, I'll say
"good luck, and hope everything works out smoothly for you!"

Out of the question. You have those eyes ;)
The house is in good shape. The stuff sitting on the lower level is mostly salvageable. It's gonna stink for a while, we may have to replace the carpet down here and work on better drainage but the upstairs is untouched.
Tell you what, though. Have a baby girl with eyes like yours and we can introduce her to my son/clone.

MrsKol
02-16-2003, 08:54 PM
temps right now are in the fifties, however tonight they are suppose to drop and we may see some snow. The roads are flooded out, the emergency crews are urging people to stay home. I baked this great apple spice bundt caked for my Adult sunday school class, with fresh strawberries on the side. Guess it won't get there. Correction, it didn't get there. Stayed home and kept the kids occupied. Some of their books were destroyed in this last flood. I'm not sure what else, but it's time to toughen the heart and realize we are all alright.
The apartment building that collapse, it was actually three building, affecting about 280 people, and NO ONE was hurt. It occurred around 300AM in the morning. That is a damn miracle that no one was hurt.

It's a shame she only got the house in september when she got married. it flooded around thanksgiving, and they are still searching for the new house.
