America has wuss snakes. None of them could stand up to the world renowned Fierce Snake we have here is Straya.

I heard that the fierce snake is (while the most dangerous land snake in the world), is anything but fierce (unless you stamp on it).

I have never been caught on film playing with my snake.....um...anyway

Snrubby,
Yes, there are several incredibly venomous species of snake in Australia. Including the fierce snake, which is the most venomous land snake. But it is very secluded and shy and accounts for almost none of the deaths or injuries from snake bite in australia

australian snake bite deaths (http://www.usyd.edu.au/su/anaes/snakebite.html)

the tools and the means for delivering that death knell are the stuff of legends
Our north American Pit vipers have tremendous deep puncturing fangs and copious quantities of venom. they have huge triangular heads and large venom sacks...

Consider most of the australian venomous snakes to be
rifles with a small bore and a huge amount of power in a small fast moving projectile projectile that will kill you
http://mzone.mweb.co.za/residents/net12980/fierce.jpg

and our north american vipers as a shotgun with a great big old barrel pointing right at you with a big slow moving projectile that will kill you.

Viperidae's hinged hollow hypodermic like fangs

Sorry, mate, nothing on this earth beats the Box Jellyfish for sheer poisonous nastiness.

Hell, we even have a spider that's tiny, fatal and enjoys sitting under toilet seat.

Is that the Funnel Web spider? I saw him on National Geographic. The Aussie's have Crazy Ass Bugs!

You forgot about the coral snake, more poisonous than any of the pit vipers in the US.

Surprising since you have it's copy cat in your signature (king snake). :p

I didn't forget but the coral snake is an elapidae like the fierce snake, I believe.
I didn't mention it due to the redundancy.
The comparison of fixed grooved fanged species to hinged hollow fanged vipers stands.

Where's uber, when you need him?

and as for my copycat...
I chose the scarlet kingsnkae for my sig cause
#1 I found it easily in the search engine
#2 it looks dangerous to humans but is far more dangerous to other snakes....I find that comforting and fitting to my signature statement.

No. The one i'm talking about is the Redback, characterized by the fact it is quite small, black, and has a little red hourglass on its abdomen.

Note to Kol: Scaring tourists is our national pastime.

Ever heard about the rockfish? Indistinguishable from a rock, doesn't move, and likes sitting in shallow water. Also has a nasty spike on its back which will inject you with enough poison to kill you very quickly.

Frankly, I don't know why people go to the beach around here.

And you silly americans think it's the SHARKS we're afraid of.

I am SSSSSSSSSSOOOOOOOOOO glad there are no snakes in NZ - horrible, vile, slithery little things. We don't have much in the way of poisonous insects (or fish) either. We have white tailed spiders - which will kill an infant but not an adult, and Katipo which can be a lot more dangerous - I think Katipo are the same as red backed spiders aren't they snrub? I've only encountered one before, in the sand dunes at the beach - but it seemed more scared of me.

We have some big ugly bugs, like the Avondale spider and cave weta's - but they are pretty harmless. Weta's can take a chunk of flesh out of you when provoked however. We do seem to get a lot of wasps, and I think there have been more deaths from wasps and bees than any other insect (mind you, thats probably because quite a few people seem to be allergic to the bastards). We also get a lot of portugese man 'o' war jelly fish, I got stung by one of those when I was six - hurt like hell and I still have scars.

I thought people from Sydney avoided the beach because of all the hypodermic needles floating around - the fish would probably be safer.

Snrubby, is that the same as the black widow?
Here's one outside my office door.

theMac didn't need to mention the Coral snake. As said it is a very reclusive and shy snake that can be picked up freehand when found (EXPERIENCED HERPS ONLY!!!!), keeping in mind it's venom is 10 times as potent as a King cobra's. Our vipers are our bad boys.
I must admit that although the US vipers are a wicked lot, I have been more impressed with a few others from other parts of the planet.
I had a fair collection of Puff Adders (Bitis Aretans) and a few superb Gaboon vipers (Bitis Gabonicus) that had far more impressive weaponry than the American vipers. Forgive my sci name spelling if it is off, my memory is only so good....
Although the Eastern Diamondback rattlesnake can grow to over 7 feet and has huge fangs and a reservior of venom to match, one can find Gaboon vipers half that size with the same size fangs and capacity.
The death toll from Puff Adders in Africa has far exceeded rattlesnake deaths in America too.
The Puff Adder doesnt give any warning, in fact wallows down into the loose soil or sand and waits for prey to wander by. Their explosive strike out of the sand is very impressive.

I think redbacks and widowmakers are related, yeah.

And muff - the beaches around Sydney have been cleaned up a LOT since the government spent a whole fuckload of money on the sewerage system to ensure runoff didn't end up on the sand.
