Nope. This is going to be a PGP instruction thread. Technical yet lovable.
Quench that feeling. And I ask everyone to allow this thread to proceed as intended without distraction.

I hope thats mental love and not physical - coz I won't be no internet 'ho.

Alright, to interested parties, you'll want to go here:
http://web.mit.edu/network/pgp.html
and download the program. Install it and we'll go from there.

It can if you're describing a dildo. ;)

I haven't checked in a while but there's an international distribution site.
Here's how this stuff is gonna work.
You'll get the software and create a key pair; public and private.
You send the public key to someone and call them up on the phone. You both call up the key's fingerprint and one of you reads it off to the other. If they match, the recipient signs your key indicating that they're sure it belongs to you.
Ideally, the signed key is then sent to a public key server so that anyone can get your key and all of it's signatures.
Let's carry the idea one step further and save you some phonecalls.
Let's say the person you called is someone I've already contacted. Their key was signed by me and I'm sure they are who they say they are. I'm also sure that if they sign someone's key, confirmation was done.
When I get your key and see their signature on it, I can be sure that they are sure it's really your key. I can then add my signature to your key and send it to the server. ETC.
Trading keys can also be done via email or by storing them on a 'net file area.
No rush. Just keep up.

PGP is cracked.
Why do I say this?
Check out the lawsuit against PGP's makers. It was suddenly dropped in the middle (1995?), for no real reason.
Why?
Because you dont tell the 'enemy' that you cracked their code. And the lawsuit after tehy cracked it was a waste of money, really.
Why do they complain about PGP? Because people expect them to, its supposedly unbreakable. By using large prime numbers. Therefore the government should complain about it.
I wouldnt use PGP even if they paid me to.
Simpler codes prearanged between sender and user, such as a misquote, funny punctuation, a misspelt word, even a combination of words, makes it much safer, as it seems innoculous. Not encoded at all.
And safer too.

Another useful side effect is that anyone with my public key can verify whether the message above is in its original form or has been altered. Do that with a misquote.

Once you install the program, go to Start>Programs> P G P> and select "PGPtray."
You should see a small lock appear on the lower right side of your taskbar, right click it to bring up the menu, and select PGPkeys.
http://www.thehypertribe.net/pgp/pgp2.gif
You'll see the PGPKeys window come up, click Keys>New Key, or hit Control+N to open the key generator dialog.
http://www.thehypertribe.net/pgp/pgp1.gif
It'll ask you for some info, such as email and name. use the default key generation settings, i.e. DSS and 2048 bit.
You don't want the key pair to expire, so leave that option checked.
Enter your passphrase, it'll be used to decrypt stuff you get. I'd suggest picking a word nobody knows about or ever will.
Inserted by Kol: the pass[b]phrase[/i] can include spaces. It's also case sensative. That means that your passphrase can be a quote but you should NEVER write it down or otherwise duplicate it. Keep the passphrase between your ears ONLY!

The only weakness in the PGP program is the people you encrypt it to giving it out, like Mushroom Man here. :)
Aside from that, if someone with the capability to crack it is coming after your ass, having your loveletters read will be the least of your problems.

TotalAnarchy
03-16-2002, 02:35 PM
I'm saying that PGP is rather pointless if it can be cracked, and by cracked I mean cracked quickly, not as it was theorised before as taking every supercomputer twice the age of the universe to run down all the combinations.
Therefore, if you just want to send messages, regular e-mail is fine. No software required. And codes necessary can be aranged before. Much more safe, because it is much more innoculous.
Therefore I see little point in PGP itself.
Escape Artist
03-16-2002, 02:37 PM
Can YOU crack it? Most people can't, and the intent of PGP is to keep info you don't want them to read hidden.
It's worked quite well for me so far.

All I am saying is that encryption can be broken. You can't break a code that has no definate/real definition as such, or no complete encoding of any kind.
Therefore I put my trust in that long before I put it in something I am quite sure is compromised.
Note : This applies to anything more confidential than what you would readily tell all your co-workers/SO/Workmates about, or be bothered if they did. Or especially if a government institution did. Because PGP comes under automatic scrutiny under Carnivore and other web searching programs, and crunched, and spat out.

Now, it's also important to keep in mind the trust factor here.
Lets say I get in contact with Stevie Hawking and trade signatures. Yay for me!
If I also trade key confirmation with Charles Manson, I'll sign his key. My signature on someone's key says nothing about my opinion of the person. It does allow others to know that I'm sure that the key I signed belongs to that person.

This brings up a question for me. GNU is just a licensing method, not a manner of encryption. Are GNU implementations of IDEA, Diffie Hellman, and RSA algorithms inherantly more secure than those used in PGP, a different sort of open source software?
Maybe you aren't pleased about the digest methods used?
Encryption software's secrecy, integrity, and non repudiation abilities are a function of the algorithms used, the implementation around them, and the strength of the escrow system used.
Yes, any encryption within the world of public key exchange (and many methods of private exchange too) can be broken. The whole idea behind it all, as with the rest of the information security world is to make it not worthwhile. There may be some parties capable of breaking these methods Kol and others are discussing, but I would doubt that the use proposed here has raised the attentions of said parties.
It never hurt to have another tool in the toolbox. You just have to know the limits of the tool.

Inirectly, that says, "VenoM Kicks Ass".
I'm paraphrasing.
When writing you always start with an introduction so people know what you are writing about.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ladies, Gentlemen, Forum Addicts, H4X0r5,
If someone REALLY wants to
hack you
decrypt you
break into your house
they will
so take all the locks off your doors and windows
cause the motivated guy is coming in anyway
infact
set all your valuables (and cheap personal momentos) in the front yard, cause you can't really protect them
sound good?
I think not.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
examplesville:
lets say I want to write kol a email all about a terrible experience I had cause he had a similar one and is a very supportive kinda guy
I type my little heart out and then enter
koliepus@blahblahblah.com
and there actually is some guy with that name who is a jackass h4X0r and now he has my email address and he knows about how terrified I am of gerbils or some shit
can you imagine some accidental instance like that?
I can imagine several.
here's another good one:
during our recent seperation my wife simply STOPPED talking to me (I ain't going into it) but suffice it to say that e-mail was the only way we had to communicate.
It was also the BEST form of communication becasue we couldn't interrupt.
Can you imagine if one of my hurting personal letters about our love and our daughter etc had been sent to the wrong place?
Moral of the story:
If it matters ENCRYPT it.
Average-Ivan-Internet can't decrypt it or use it against you unless you give him your key and password.
If the gov't wants it they'll get it.
Course they can just tap your fuckin phone or take your machine too.
So get over that crap and come back when you figure out a use for something simple, effective and free.

I can't decrypt any of the messages in this thread.... Are they sent so that specific people can read them? This is starting to frustrate me. :)
