We spy on our friends and enemies as well.

I don't understand where a "backdoor" is a security risk on sensitive material. Sensitive material should not be stored on a computer that is connected to any network or other computers. If you want to keep something secret make the building and computer secure. Our Top Secret documents are manipulated with Microsoft products but a back-door won't get you anything unless you can crack into the safe and break the encryption.
When credit card numbers are stolen online it is out of negligence of the person storing them. If you trust software to protect your data you will be disappointed eventually. Sensitive data must be isolated and physically safeguarded such as using a removable hard drive and storing it in a safe.
This all sounds politically motivated. If you claim you lost sensitive government information because someone used a back door it would not keep you out of jail. You would be prosecuted for negligence.
The story is cool because it bashes Microsoft and the NSA. While I agree that they should both be harangued I think they are not to blame for this.
I hope the Germans offer their OS to the public.

Woof.
If it's so sick, why are you laughing?
