I can't help you. I equate my watching an entire episode of any of those shows to drilling a hole in my skull and firing up the Hoover.

like albert said on realtate.. its the "civilized" version of the roman Colosseum.... we cant throw people to the lions anymore to be mauled... or watch them fight each other with deadly weapons.. but we still want to.. deep down inside we have a sick desire for brute anger and displays of violence.. or some do... so instead we find other ways to pit humanity against each other. boxing, wrestling, survivor.. geez.. there are so many.. and all equally stupid
its like rubbernecking traffic accidents.. we cant help watching the gore.. or the less intelligent ones cant help it.. ok wait.. the ones who cant help watching these pathetic shows and actually enjoy it and call it "the show of the season" are the less intelligent ones.. some ppl just dont have anything better to do.. i say read a book.. but thats my opinion.. and i dont run your life...
fuck it.. i say we bring back the roman Colosseum...and let them kill each other the old style. make gladiators the REAL GLADIATORS.. then wed really see who had balls..

TV is TV. Watching any show is all the same. it just comes down to what entertains us. Some people watch news programs, some people watch reality based programming. It shouldn't be some huge dilemma.

Likening it to the Colosseum (I agree) begs the question why did people attend executions and gladiator fights?
The desire to not miss out? To not let your neighbor get one up on you by knowing something sensational you don't?
Morbid curiosity? A moth drawn to a flame. We are fascinated with those things.
I doubt if asked many people would say "we need more traffic wrecks on TV" but if there was a traffic wreck show on TV it would get high ratings because you wouldn't want to show up at work and have someone in the coffee room say "Wow did you see that guys head roll down the offramp?" and have to say ..."Um no".
I think those shows are crap, unedifying drivel. They have no value but they get good ratings because of social pressures. It is an example of "Don't give the people what they need, want, or ask. Give them something to steal ratings from the other channels no matter the consequences".

Oh god.....I actually want to see Boot Camp on Fox. Theres something about watching civilians get yelled, something about seeing civilian crying because they can't pull off 3 pushups, if their lives depended on it. I dunno, something about pain and misery that atrracts my attention. Besides, you dont need TV see that kind of stuff, just read the newspaper. I hope this need to see pain and misery doesnt't mean im lazy and stupid.

I'd like to try boot camp.
I would probably get something out of it.
American's don't like their lives. They want live out the lives of others through televisions. In the TV show Frasier, I could identify with Niles, because he was attached to an evil bitch, and there was something more dilectible to be had if he could only get away. I had that same thing going on in my life. I don't know what the hell that means. Ignore that.
People want action. Crap. Hysteria. Money. They want the action their lives don't hold a candle to.
I'm going to jump around now.

"Real" TV isn't interesting enough. It is still "planned" and moderated & censored & edited, etc. We only get to see what they want us to see after they have manipulated the "real" people into doing what they want them to do. These "real" people also know they are on camera. I've only wasted my time watching it a combined total of 5 times for all aformentioned shows. Voyer TV would be REAL TV, and that I would watch. That would be real. Real people doing real people things in their real life, unaware that they are being watched. Make room on the couch and pass me the Fritos, please...

THE FOLLOWING POST IS DIRECTED AT NO ONE IN PARTICULAR.

-----------------------------

If my tags are off, I'll fix 'em later.
Let's see here. We have Cops and CourtTV to show us the criminal element, RealWorld to show us what happens when too many rats inhabit one cage, Fox gives us trainwrecks, violent animals etc ad infinitum...
Hmm. What happens if you throw some money at the people watching this stuff? AH! I know! Let's test it.
In comes Millionaire. Lo and behold, the ratings soar.
What say we combine the money with the bloodlust? "Survivor" is a title that will attract attention. Who wouldn't want to watch some people fight for their lives in order to put some cash in their pocket?
Ah, shit! We can't actually let people die so... Think think...
Got it! They already like gameshows and soaps! We can work that in in place of actual death. They won't catch on and they'll forgive us for misleading them. If they complain, we'll just point out the illegality and immorality of what they thought they were getting. If they have to eat bugs or have a disfiguring accident in the meantime, so much the better.
GRRRRRR!!! This is one of the reasons I disconnected our TV service yet it still leaks in through the cracks.
Here's an idea. You give me 4 million $US plus expenses and I'll follow a starving Indian around until his/her death. As an extra added bonus, I'll time-lapse the decomposition of the corpse (wailings of family members will cost extra but we can negotiate).
Send your check or money order straight to:
HELL P.O. Box 3825968
I've said enough. I'm gonna see if I can find some footage of rodents being stomped to death so I can calm down.

You will have to notice something about these shows: a reality-based, competetive TV show should ideally feature people we aspire to be, yet at the same time, people we can identify with.
They all have beautiful people who are fucked up in the head...no real intelligence or athletic ability, but they are VERY good at stabbing someone in the back.
From this I infer that we are supposed to aspire to be attractive, but at the same time it's ok to be a vicious backstabbing weasel with faked-up psychological disorders (exhibit "A": The Real World, Road Rules, etc.).
I would like to see a show about people in wheelchairs somehow making a cross-country journey through the wilderness with no supplies. REAL Heroes. But, of course, it wouldn't sell, because most people idolize people that are as shallow-minded and petty as they are themselves.

You're way out of order here RW.
I'll share a few points for her.
I hated your red ass over at the spf, when I saw you starting threads like ' a general clearing of the air ', telling everybody that they were shit, and if they showed some intelligence they might be invited to this ' special ' forum. I called you on it, and quite fucking rightly.
The spf is, due to a huge membership, a starting block for a lot of people who enter forums. I am guilty, I entered that forum as a luddite. It's all those blue links that stile posts on his main page, one of them says forum. I would guess that 50% of the people that post here come from there as well.
You ask people not to confuse your persona over there with your persona here, so what the fuck did I just quote.
Microwoman was one of the two people who stood up for me after I got myself banned from the spf, the other was Denominator (RIP).
I got myself banned from there on a principle, and I wish to return there bearing the same principles.
You've amassed over 3000 posts over there RW and you only go there to cause shit, act like an arsehole, and demean people?
That place is a breeding ground for thought, to abandon it is like abandoning the future generation.
P.S. You are not my leader

All I can say, skalie, is
THINK BEFORE YOU POST
You want to take offense to anything and everything I say, you feel free to do so. I really don't give a fuck if I offend you or not.
Just be right when you confront me. Now read that shit again, engage your brain, and stop looking for things to be offended by and just MAYBE you'll get the point this time.
Back it up and do it again.

Thinking before I post is not an option, I only open my mouth to change feet, and the disease is catchy.
I do not take offence to anything and everything you say, I take every thread for it's merits and I will only start getting twitchy if something pisses me off.
In this case it is hypocriscy tainted with what I would imagine is a little egomania.
