Anybody think this was a harsh punishment?
I think he should have at least been granted parole. I think he was overly curious and unusually impressionable. Where were his parents? I do believe they should share part of the blame.

I read a similar article somewhere else and one comment was ' How is a 65 year old man going to feel knowing he has been sent to jail for life for something he did when he was 12 ? '.
I think the penalty is way over the top.
The alternative option of three years in a juvenile institution seems much more befitting to the crime.

Don't take it the wrong way.
He'll be fine. Once he's institutionalized he'll make friends, learn self-defense, learn to trade smokes for a little push-push, and then when he get's out (Life? Pbbah)
It's all good, Jerry.
OF COURSE THERE'S SOMETHING WRONG, GODDAMMIT!!
The way the court handled this case is an admission that they don't know what to do with circumstances such as this even when the eyes of the world are on them.
The parents should be held accountable for the upbringing of the child, but that's tantamount to blowing out one candle to make another seem as if it's burning brighter.
Tell me first;
What are the options?
Disregard the verdict for a moment, please.
How would you handle this?

I fully support not just the sentence, but what it symbolizes. I like that kids are finally getting punishments that fit the crime. They need to learn that they can't get away with murder because of their age. His age is irrelevant...he took a human life. Kids need to learn that if you do the crime, you do the time. That's the price you pay for being dumb enough to imitate stuff you see on tv. I'm glad he's where he belongs. But knowing our "justice" system, he'll be out within two years.

I understand where you are coming from and I agree with you up to a point.
I don't believe that the sentence handed down to this young boy will influence the behavior of any other foolish 12 year olds.
I don't believe his life sentence will be a deterrence for other children. Hell, I doubt there will be too many children even aware of the situation.
Like many of you, I wonder where the parents were when this happened. Why was the boy not better instructed and better supervised?
I hereby request that the right to reproduce be revoked from all humans until further notice.
No offense intended toward any parents reading this. My statements have more to do with my total lack of faith in the human race rather than individual parenting competency.</FONT c>

The prosecution offered the defense a plea bargain: 3 years in juvi hall, and an extensive term on parole. The defense turned it down.
Under law, any individual tried as an adult for 1st degree murder will get mandatory life sentence.
BUT
THE KID WAS 12 WHEN HE DID THIS!! NOT A FUCKING ADULT!
I guess being charged a little kid doesn't mean shit. The whole charged as an adult thing is such a crock of shit, adults are what, 18, 21? The kid was 12. Couldn't even get a job, and he's locked away for life. This is sick.
The prosecution, the people who charged this kid, are pleading with the governor to reduce the sentance because they feel it is wrong.
The US has a sick, pathetic, sad excuse for a justice system. It's so fucked, and I can't talk about it anymore, i'm too upset.

Exactly, but who is getting punished here?
A 12 / 14 year old kid who is going to be locked up for the rest of his life.
The tax payers who will be providing his lodgings and care.

Rock climbing. Now that is a sport that teaches kids things.
Pride. Self control. Determination.
No violence. No tits. No ass. No beer commercials.
These so called "x" sports are good. They have not been fucked over and socialized to the point where they hurt kid's perception of life. Although, they are dangerous.
Eh, who cares? I'm tired of worrying about other people's troubles. I have finals to study for.

Pfffft....this case obviously shows that the justice system and whatever....doesn't care about the children. These days its all about the children, isn't it? Its as if they just handed the sentence and that's it, problem solved, justice has been served. After this no kids gonna dare imitate and perform dangerous shit they see on T.V. Right? Im disappointed, I thought there would be a lot more. Giving a life sentence to a 14 year old boy is not only half-assed attempt to serve justice it does absolutely nothing. Now does America wanna solve a problem or not? I bet we will be see more of this shit in the future.

The sentence was mandatory...as in no discretion...I think the child had a shitty lawyer if he turned down a plea like that just to hold on to some pride or some other worthless shit...fuck that...him and his mother are self righteous morons who got the shaft cause they begged for it...
The kid actually killed a little girl...thats just wrong...he didnt know what he was doing and he killed someone...too bad...
He was tried as an adult...thats a bit fucked up...but I do think harsher punishments should be inacted for kids...damnit...Im scatter brained...fuck this...hope I made some sense...

yes, i think the sentence is far too harsh, but we dont know if he is lying or not, if he killed her on purpose, or if he really was acting as a wrestler.
i also think the this FL get tough on law bullshit is using this kid as an example.
i also dont think he should be tried as an adult.

I think this case will contest the constitutionality of the get tough on crime law.
I don't think the injuries described fit the explanation. It was not "one" action that created 30+ injuries. There is no way that the little girl was having fun. He victimized her and probably battered her body after she was dead. He doesn't belong in jail. He belongs in an institution getting help. She must have cried out in pain until she was unconscious and it sounds like he continued to use her as a toy.
Look at the snippet of evidence we are offered in the article and decide if the little girl was having fun and if the boy acted with any human compassion. Diagnosis....Psychopath.

Why should we give kids any special royalty about such crimes?
Yes... children have a different sense of right and wrong that isn't as developed as it should be... But EVERY kid should know about violence. EVERY kid should know about Murder and death. EVERY kid should know that with crime comes punishment.
But this is not to say i think the penalty is justified. If you ask me the kid should get juvied until 18 and then maybe a 20 year prison sentence. Like i said.. Just cause he's a kid doesn't mean he should be treated as anything less than a murderer. What's sad is that here in houston a man stabbed and killed a nother man for 50 dollars and only got 20 years. Meanwhile some kid acts like a retard and kills a little girl by a supposed "accident" and he gets life.
Basically i feel that this kid NEEDS to be incarcerated. But life?? i'm not so sure.

This is no personal attack at you DB we just have a difference of opinion.
This is something that i think is very wrong. All too often you hear about a man getting rehabilitated on drugs and then weeks later he's back on. Physical addiction is a bitch, but people who have actually mustered up the true evil to take another person's life... that's a crime i think is deeply seeded into a person.
Send them to jail or fucking gas them. Death is the only equal consequence for cold blooded murder. Especially the kind of murder you so desribed.

I see where you are coming from Stevo.
I agree that violent crime deserves a sentence of death where the circumstances warrant it.
In this case I don't think a rational human being could have perpetrated this crime. My assessment was based on the pervasive nature of the attack. He continued to assault his victim after it was clear he was doing great bodily harm. I see no motivation for the crime other than some sort of pleasure gained my controlling his victim. I believe the boy is quite insane and therefore did not understand what he was doing the way you and I understand it. Punishing him for doing something he didn't understand the full impact of would be wrong.
If he is ever released he will be a threat to society and will probably repeat this crime without a second thought. He should be locked up as a criminally insane person for the rest of his life.
I am very disappointed when someone gets off with an insanity plea but if someone is insane it does not make sense to punish them for it. If your dog ate your parakeet no one would seek his life, the dog did something horrible but he didn't understand that it was wrong.

yeah but you can roll up that magazine right?
I guess we differ just because i feel that anyone who can commit murder without just cause, is insane in any case, plead or not.
It's horrible that a child can do such things. But if my dog attacked another dog and brutally destroyed it after he got away from a leash he would be put to death. He didn't understand.. it was instinct to protect and prey on the weak.
Which could bring us to another topic..
I'm responsible for letting my dog on the loose even if it was not intentional. There almost certainly would be some sort of duty on my part other than putting the dog down, to pay for such a loss.
Should this kid's parents be at all responsible?? should the girl's parents be in any way responsilbe for having no supervision of their child?? I'm not quite sure either way?? anyone?

HAHAHAAHAHAHAAA!! Whatever...
I may not be any more clear headed over here, but that kid and his mother are fucking idiots for not taking the plea bargain...if someone says "would you like to pay a dollar now or wait a while and maybe pay one dollar or maybe pay 100,000 dollars??" what do you do??
Fucking moron...he obviously has bad decision making skills...and it looks like it runs in the family...kill them all...

I actually agree with DB here, partially. The death was no accident. Medical experts stated that the injuries sustained by the little girl were BEYOND those that could be created by just playing around. I, too, don't understand why the family didn't take the 3 years and run like hell. Then he would have gotten off light for murder. Yes, I said murder. He blames his actions on television. I saw Bugs Bunny shoot Elmer Fudd hundreds of times but never once have I aimed a gun at someone's temple. I saw Bo and Luke Duke jump a car over a river hundreds of times and not once have I attempted that at home. Life's actions cannot be blamed on entertainment. (If you can call it that.)
Where were the fucking parents ?!?!?! Great question. Some of us were latch key children with less guidance than probably needed, but my parents made DAMN sure that somebody responsibly knew what the hell I was doing.
You need a license to drive a car.
You need a license to catch a fish.
You need a license to get married.
Any two assholes can have children.
Life? Too steep? Ask the parents of the six year old what they think. At least that kid will be able to live a while longer.

In order to understand the perspectives presented, I have to put myself in the place of those involved by using my own children as examples.
If someone (child or adult) killed one of my kids, I would use every means at my disposal to rip that person to shreads with my bare hands.
If one of my kids killed another person...
First I would blame myself. Then I would do whatever it took to see that my child would not be executed. That's the parent in me. No parent should be comfortable with the death of their child, no matter the circumstances.
The harsh truth is that this young man killed. By law and media, the possible outcome of his future has already been determined. If his lawyers find a way to have him released, the family of the girl will have either forgiven him or sealed his death by their own hands (perhaps indirectly).
He'll probably do some time, end up on a talk-show describing his mistreatment, piss off the wrong person and end up on a slab.
Before you jump to conclusions, I used my 10 month old son as his placeholder in this thought process.
I'd rather take the public flogging.
