View Full Version : Roger & Me
I sat up till midnight last night watching that, in its entirety, for the first time.
I laughed all the way through it till my stomach hurt and I couldn't breath.
I shouldn't have, I know.
And Mike Moore strikes me as....odd.
But when he asked the beauty Queen about what was going on with the factorys shutting down and she sat their asking everyone to please pray for her to win Miss America...and then she did.

I think Mike Moore is a bit of a selfrighteous fuckhead, but he can be funny. I like the one where he dressed actors up like Puritans and videotaped them going around Congress accosting those who had had affairs.
Seeing a puritan guy point at Newt Gingrich and scream "FORNICATOR!!!" and have the three puritan women behind him scream and faint was a classic.

I LOVE Roger and Me. It is my favourite documentarian, and it is what prompted me to do a double major in anthropology and film.
Excellent.

They do go hand in hand. Anthropology really helps when filming a project. Doesn't necessarily have to be about another culture or some far away land. Knowing about different human behaviours, societies really gives you a good insight on filming.
Alas, I am now working on my second degree, computer science. Such an ackward turn. I enjoy them and it comes pretty naturally to me.
At least I'll be a well developed individual.Who knows what will become of all three.

I wouldn't dismiss it out of hand as simply a comedy, Mac. It was one of the best and more powerful political statements made in the 80s via film, although not neccessarily a statement I agree with. Entertaining and funny, yes, but also a bitingly sarcastic social commentary. A lot of documentaries try very hard to be as objective as possible. This is one of the few that was very obviously slanted -- and still worked well.
Generally when I make ad hoc top 10 lists of the best films I've ever seen, Roger & Me regularly holds a place. I HIGHLY recommend it to anybody.

Making Life Less Lifelike (http://www.asylumwhores.com)
I know its not a comedy.
It is demonstrating the rdiiculous (comedic) state of things as they happened.
The fact that it was literally a movie script waiting to be made.
Thats why I laugh.
I couldn't write something as classistly stereotypical or as bleeding heartedly slanted.
But neither did he.
Its for real.
The rich walking around like everything is ok as long as they are ok.
The ambitious chasing their dreams and believing that everyone else is busy chasing theirs.
But it fails when it reaches the part about familys put out on the street at christmas.
About repeat layoffs.
This is where YOU are supposed to put in your beliefs.
But most people turn to liberalism and gov't solutions that are "fair" to everyone and protect our "equality"
The goal of dick-heads movie was for us to see that the rich guy on top didn't care about the thousands of people and their communities.
and he was right.
Why its like that is a topic for a looooooooooooong thread in a nother forum.

Michael also has another movie / documentary out called "The Big One." It was filmed while doing his book tour for "Downsize This" that he wrote a few years back. The book was actually pretty good and the movie was right up there with Roger and Me.
You just have to take Michael with a grain of salt and remember that HE has an agenda just like everyone else.
P.S. I wanna marry the rabbit lady.
