I can't help but remember my BBS days--basically tiny little communities that would compete for your time (and your $5/month membership fee, for the really swanky ones). My first experience with larger communities was Prodigy in 1990--essentially a very large BBS. They introduced "real" internet services slowly, beginning with database searches and e-mail, then FTP. Now they just run a cut-rate ISP which I think kinda sucks.

Anyway the point is I don't think having a closed-in community is a bad thing...I do however think that AOL is sux when it comes to content...</FONT f>
