I would appreciate your take on this:

If the US were unable to conduct effective commerce with other nations, then the nation would die. We have interests overseas that must be protected. However, there are certain individuals who would like to see the military vanished because they would rather "take care of themselves." Do you suppose all our merchant ships and oil rigs should be armed, too?

I'm not sure the Founding Fathers could have foreseen the Aegis missile system. But by all means, when we abandon the military (which civilians do all the time unless they are directly threatened), pardon me for not hanging around when you try to take on the first Chinese frigate that enters Boston harbor with your little guns.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that the military is accountable to the nation. Individuals are accountable to nobody but themselves. What you advocate is rule by the strong and the rich--hardly freedom at all.[/font]
