You know how it is. You spend years getting your system set up the way you want it and then buy a new system and have to start all over again.

In your opinion, what's the best way to move your stuff over from your current system to a new one?

just let the porn go! theres more out there!

i have been deleting porn (pics and big mpegs and shit) from my computer and I feel relieved since I have organized, encrypted, and saved to a 3.5 all my web accounts! only way i could make it better is if i could fucking do a search through them. i gotz mad email and shitty hosting accounts, important shitz as well. hard passwords on them all. damn, did i ever trail off!

Now here's a potentially stupid retort. Can to Comp's be linked by something as simple as com ports? I Recall a freind calling my old 25 mhz PC over the phone system and Being able to type no my screen and whatnot. Do you have to use a phone network for things like that? Or can you just link the 2 comps that way?

Thats a plan, however if the drive from the old system is put in a new system with a different motherboard the old HD will find all these new hardware devices and install them. It will then have two sets of some things {like the IDE controller} this can cause problems. Weird ones.

I think I would just install the old drive as a slave and pull the data off that way. You still have to re-install any old applications but any saved info, pics etc, you could copy to the new drive.

Did I mention I am talking about Winblows in this situation? What is your OS, Kol?

My first post as a mod here and it sucks ass, go me!

You're an idiot. Take a class...read a book...buy a clue...whatever.

yes, its called direct cable connection. i never tryed it but im pritty sure its like a little network only no hub. just the two computers hooked through the LPT port or like you said the com port.

try taking your hard drive out of the old computer and putting it in the new one, copy the shit you want, and then put the hard drive back in the old computer. i dont have a zip drive so thats what i usually do.

The question is currently hypothetical. I've set up seven systems (to date) and have only recently considered moving from one system to another en mass.

A few days ago, a banner ad caught my eye concerning this topic, but I was intent on a goal and passed it by. I tend to ignore ads much as I would swat a gnat.

Linking two systems with properly configured cables (not at all hard to build) and the proper software interface can make file transfers between systems happen in moments. The structure of the original system is what is difficult (for me) to reproduce. Now that I have kids, the time to do it is hard to come by. If there is a software package available that would mirror my system onto a new machine, I would spooge.

I recall that the banner made note of the similarities between moving into a new house and moving into a new system.

Familiar?

As I said, this is hypothetical. It's simply preparation for the inevitable.

A software package only? Couldnt find one. Hardware wise we use this where I work Dupli-disk (http://www.arcoide.com/). Its mad. It is really designed so two drives are written too at the same time. If the primary fails the mirror takes over and the system stay running. We are using it on our servers and it works. We set it up and then yanked the IDE cable out of the primary drive and the mirror took over instantly all applications stayed running. Sweet! OK thats not relevant to your situation.

It can also be used to basically copy hard drives. Slap in the one you want to clone and the drive you want to have that information on and say OK, bingo! exact copy.

Well its not that easy but it aint rocket science, either. Its not that cheap either.

I still say slave the pig and transfer the data. Virgin OS on a new system, yummy.

most of you are on the right track...though some are making it harder than it is.

Take an image of disk and store it on either a CD, Zip-drive or a network! Preferrable a CD or network..

Use Norton Ghost.

Has anyone had any experience with alohabob (http://www.alohabob.com) ?

Found the link recently and may have to use it or something like it eventually.
