My computer is a piece of junk, but I'm stuck with it until my ship comes in.
It frequently "freezes" or "locks up", especially when I am utilizing an audio application. What ever audio is playing starts repeating the most recent sound byte, over and over again, like a stratched record skipping. (anyone here remember vinyl records?) ctrl + alt + delete has no effect when this happens. I have to literally turn off and on the damn machine to get it going again.
I can't listen to mp3's and browse the net at the same time because I know my machine will lock up.
Anyone have a clue as to what the problem might be? Better yet, can it be fixed?

I used to have that problem. Not enough free memory. I had 1500 mp3's and too much porn and movies and nearly no free memory left to run applications. You need to go through every directory and folder in your whole computer and delete the shit you don't need. Stay out of the Windows directory though, you'll fuck it up really good if you erase anything from there. If you have a zip drive zip all the stuff you can. I bought an external hard drive and that's where EVERYTHING like music, movies, graphics, etc. is stored. Runs like a champ now...

my conclusion: you need a new computer, and fast. They have pretty decent systems out for like $500 these days. And you can buy ram for cheap too, if you know where to look.

Try reformatting the hard drive. Save what you value or create a back up then wipe it out & start over. I've done it many times and my computer will run good for a few months.
Try that. Or burn it and get a new one.. .

Mine does the same thing, and my comp is only a little over a year old, and it has 82% free disk space...I often find that if I defrag it, it works for a few days...then I have to do it again. I still can't figure out why mine does it when I have so much memory.

I have 64 MB of RAM.
Hard drive capacity is 6.03 GB.
2.61 GB used, 3.41 GB free space.
I don't think memory is an issue, at least not on the hard drive. Any other wise guys care to comment?

OK, these are generalities. Take em with a grain of salt.
Hard drive space is not memory, it is storage. Big difference there. Unless your drive is so fragmented that your computer has to hunt for all the pieces of files, how big your hard drive is or how much data you have stored on it is generally not an issue.
Most audio programs use DMA, or Direct Memory Access, which gives peripherals access to memory without using the CPU as an intermediary. This is often where you can run into problems, depending on the drivers for your particular sound card, i.e. single-access mode, multi-access mode, and so on. Check your hardware docs for any references to compatibility issues or DMA requirememnts.
The problem could be as simple as reloading or upgrading to new drivers for your sound card, removing a few of your TSR's (Terminate and Stay Resident). These are the programs that put a little icon in your system tray. When you hit ctrl-alt-delete, a window normally pops up and shows you what all is running in RAM. End task on everything exept systray and explorer, then try to run the audio process that normally locks up your computer. If it works, try not running a bunch of that stuff (the TSR's) until you actually need em.
My opinion anyway, but then what the hell do I know?
