View Full Version : Ask the Phone Man

Since I was 9 I've been pulling wire.
Punching down connections.
And terminating jacks with extreme predjudice.

So, if you needed some help, I might accidentally know a thing or two about phone wiring.

Course I could be wrong.

Let me open with this.
RW, I spoke with the PhoneMaster...he assured me that the "gas ground" the telephoneman told you about works like this.

The blocks the wires are terminated to are filled with an inert mixture of gases that act as a shunt when a serious voltage spike occurs. But (like I told you)they are shorting to the third pole on the block which is a GROUND lug. It must be tied to earth ground or else you have just built a nice capacitive charge that must continue through your houses phone wiring....into your expensive computers "and what not".

We'll fix it when the idiots are done. http://www.thehypertribe.net/ubb/smile.gif

You know anywhere where I could get a convertor to run a modem over a digital line?

If some dick plugs his analog modem into a digital line, could this fuck up the modem?

Well, I'm not doin so good.

I totally don't understand Cruise Director and I know nothing of modem specs.

What do you mean by digital line ?
DSL?
ISDN?
The wire is the same.
The equipment handling the dta transfer is different.
I would suspect your modem will not work.
Probably give you a "could not detect" error of some kind
or a "check your settings" message.

Hehe, back to drinkin. http://www.thehypertribe.net/ubb/smile.gif

Most PBX's now are digital.
On my dial up to Tyler, (about 30 miles) all the PBX's are digital except one.
That one drops dial up to around 24Kb.
But I dial up Longview from work and get through with out any analog switches and I connect at 33K on the same machine...some of the better machines connect at 44K.

So, In my experience you should hook up faster.

My dad is the guy to ask about that But I believe the digital switches are normally installed when the interconnection is handled by fibre optics.
What a massive improvement in data handling.
Literally handleing LAYERS of data in a wire the size of a human hair.

So..Hook it up and SEE http://www.thehypertribe.net/ubb/biggrin.gif

You took all the fun out of my joke. It's a quote from "Mr. Mom."

Sorry Cruise... http://www.thehypertribe.net/ubb/frown.gif

But I'll play along with Mr. Mom.

My Grandma once told me a man who can't cook clean and sew for himself is not a man.

Last night my dear tiny daughter came in all upset cause her favorite baby (the ugliest, cheapest, most poorly constructed) was torn.

So I sewed.

I'm rather good at it anyway...but it was never so important.

What is the minumum data rate that phone lines are required to support?

That I know of there is no standard other than for the wire itself.

The true limiting factor is how many junctions or splices it goes through between here and the switch.

The VERY best line connection I've seen yet is around 44K. That seems to be about as fast as copper wire and tip & ring will let you go.
But if you live a long way from the switch or go through a bunch of interconnection poits you may go ALOT slower.
As I said earlier, I call Tyler from my office and go through one analogue switch about halfway there...and every computer in here hooks up @ 24K.
I call Longview and I hook up @ 33K on the slow ones(pentiumII 60MRAM) and 44K(pentiumIII or better, 128MRAM) on the fast ones.(I'm not sure what type of modems they have in them..standard HP & Compaq)

What happens with DSL or ISDN is you transfer the data in a different format.
They have to dedicate that line to that data format at both ends of the cable.
Its like the difference between pouring water from one cup to another...
And blowing water through a pipe with an aircompressor.
Same amount of water ALOT more "pressure"

That's why it goes so much faster. That's also why they charge you so much extra.
