This will be a long story, of little interest to most, if not all, but it
is also a request for tech help.
.......two weeks ago I went to a local supermarket, nothing out
of the ordinary in that you might say, and you would be correct.
Anyway on the bulletin board is an ad.....laptop for parts, USA $10.
I ring up, go there, turns out to be a compaq from 1996, a lte 5150, and it's
fucked. There are vertical multicoloured lines running up and down the screen
and the top half of the screen is repeated underneath, sort of like a double
post in a forum. I buy it what the fuck, and I give the guy an extra $10 for a 10mps
ethernet card.
OK, I get home, I can get into the menu of the thing and after a hell of a lot
of pushing ctrl, alt, delete and other combinations the screen 'undoubles'.
OK step one is to get windows 95 into it. Now the laptop has no CD-rom, so it
was a matter of splitting files up and on to floppy etc. etc.
I am by the way a luddite by persuasion and this action was undertaken by a
helping hand. The first time I ever hit a .exe was just over a year ago, and
my only experience has been with win 98, and I'd hardly even see a floppy
before.
Ok windows 95 is in, the lines on the screen are terrible, but changing the
settings to black background and they're bearable. They come up as white
lines now and are at their worst when the computer is thinking or processing or
whatever.
Next step, try and network the little buggar with my PC. After loads of
attempts it appears that the ethernet card doesn't work. So I've been trying to
link them with the parellal ' printer ' port, also without success.
I just want to get some software into the thing, it's either networking,
dealing with floppies or buying an external/ internal CR-rom drive.
What could be the reasons that i can't get them networking.
Is it because the laptop speaks dutch (windows95) and the PC english
(win98SE)? I bought the correct cable, and have even adventured into the
BIOS, to open up the ports, but they still wont fucking talk to each other.
I was hoping that maybe one of you wise old sages may have a few tips for me,
also concerning the screen problem, I've been all over the net searching
with no joy.
More info on request.
